Its not a question of how bad the noise, but exactly where it is. With the hose trick, its easy for example to locate a growling alternator or water pump bearing that cannot normally be heard above general engine noise. If you pass over every tappet with the hose end, the bad one will be VERY obvious and cannot be mistaken.
