I prefer the use of a bit of dowel rod you can feel vibration through it as well as hear noises.

using the garden hose trick. can be a bit drastic? surely the noise isn't that bad Rich. Its not a question of how bad the noise, but exactly where it is. With the hose trick, its easy for example to locate a growling alternator or water pump bearing that cannot normally be heard above general engine noise. If you pass over every tappet with the hose end, the bad one will be VERY obvious and cannot be mistaken.
