Howard - they're not bad when cold. There was about 2 seconds difference between warm and cold ar1's on a 50s auto-x for me. 2 seconds is a huge difference, but they wheren't sketchy, progressive breakaway and such, just less grip.

Hmmm, unfortunately the Extremes are off my list as I drive the MX5 to events (up to 180 miles each way), a super soft compound would mean that I would do quite a few sets in a season. I know this because I did 3 sets when in my TVR. So have had to compromise on R888Rs, all I have to do is go 2.25% faster to justify the change.

I'm not sure I'd trust all that weight on a thin sheet of metal, a couple of small hinges and a weedy bootlock... lol

Interesting to read your experience with the Extreme's nookey. I've now used them for a couple of sprints and one hill climb and do rate them. At Kames which is a very abrasive track the Extreme's feel great from the start, the stiff sidewall gives you good confidence in them both cornering and under braking, they're noticeably sharper on the brakes than R888R's and turn in very nicely, they're well balanced up to and over the limit and break away progressively. I've not properly tried them against the R888R's as it was wet when running them but I've taken 2 seconds off my previous best over a 90 sec sprint compared with AD08R's. As you mention they don't actually grip well off the line though, maybe due to the stiff sidewall and the lifespan of them is very much in question, at Kames they suffer badly with the compount moving and balling up.... 20190407_155448 by David Wallace, on Flickr Pretty much all class A9 records have been set on them up here though and a lot of the road cars have switched to them. Wow, they don't look like they'll last long!! I do drive to events and can't be bothered with swapping over.. it's normally Gurston and only 25-30 miles each way. Which compound are you using - R5 or the softer R7? Good to see that we have similar experiences with them and that the Scottish MX5 Competitors rate them.

Done over 500miles with it on now with no issues other than water getting in the boot!

That's the R5 compound, they work well from the off, R7's would melt! The wear seems to be high when first put on like above but then steadys, had another sprint at the weekend on them on a smooth track and they didn't wear much but were excellent.

Managed to take 0.45 off my previous best at Gurston on Sunday, only changes to the car were a new set of VR2’s and Carpet removal (which is offset by the driver having an all inclusive holiday a couple of weeks ago).
I was surprised how little the carpets weighed and not really worth it IMO.

So I watched an mx5 set a class record at Gurston last weekend on Extreme vr2. Very impressed with the amount of grip he had round Ashes. I have bought a spare set of wheels and when I have some cash will have a set for any sprints or hillclimbs that are not in the MX5 challenge champs (list 1A only!). a softer compound 1b tyre has got to be the choice for a speed class - hoping to do Wiscombe at some time so may try them there. I will be driving to and from on my PS3s (I can get 4 wheels in the 5 - just!

I was looking to replace my Uniroyal Rainsport3 with like for like, but it's not much more for Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance or again for the Michelin Pilot Sport 3.
Pilot Sport 3 probably the way to go?

I've run the PS3 - super-grippy and secure for a RWD-noob like me I never had them snap away unless it was icy (my fault for too many revs and too low tyre tread) or inches deep in water (faaaar too low tread).
