"but they were the 'tyre of choice' for the mx5 race series"

and for a bit of objectivity...
the NS2R are a nice track tyre (which I have no worries about driving in the rain on) with a nice communicative feel and progressive enough break away... there are tyres which will give you better lap times (thinking R888/R888R) but not at £60/corner which is frankly very cheap!
Toyo do do (tee hehe, do-do) a good tyre, namely the R888(R) but that doesn't mean every tyre the make is quality... I think I said this before, but both the T1R and Rainsports have horrid wobbly tread blocks that ruin the feel and communication creating horrible 'lag' in the steering.

So I’ve had the Michelin ps3 on for all of theof this year so far for autosolos, sprints, hillclimbs, track and general mucking about - can’t fault them as an all rounder - cold, hot, wet or dry.

Out of the top 3 cars out of 60+ in the Classic Marques Speed Championships, 2 were on Rainsports & 1 on R888Rs.

Not surprised - in a speed event Rainsports are a good all rounder, dont need temperature (in fact better without it ) - many sprints and climbs dont allow warming on the line anyway, plus they are great in the wet R888Rs would be much better than rainsports on multiple track laps and seem to be a good tyre for the mx5 - never had them so cant comment on wet performance I found rainsports really did not like autosoloing!!

Solos are harder on tyres than sprints/hills, I've never run Rainsports (I have them on my SUV but that doesn't count 😂) so can't really comment on them but there are plenty of independent tests of them about and it's rarely a top tyre, of course in the dry the difference between top 10 tyres is very small when it comes to half decent road tyres and it's the tyres other attributes that help differentiate.

Totally agree, but in CM there’s a 2.5% penalty for 1B tyres (R888etc) which I’ve found 1A (normal road tyres) Rainsports have the edge on. You’re also right about those Extreme things- heard about people raving about them & then look at their times - meh!

Having said that, I’ve just put a set of AD08Rs on a couple of days ago & they’re pretty good (& also were lying about in the back of the garage). Bit of a tip- if you want a 1A tyre to behave very closely to a 1B, go to this man...... www.midlandtyreshaving.co.uk/4.html

Yes, I do it on my tyres. Makes a massive difference if you have to use normal rlad tyres for class rules....It was pretty cheap I thought. Give Marcus a call.

There's a few guys in class A9 up here who have now started running the Extreme VR2's, the 2 that changed first have dipped below the class record at the last 3 rounds, over a second quicker generally. The previous times were set on either maxsport RB5's or nankang NS2R in 120 wear rate (These were the mandatory tyre for a season). We don't run a penalty system though.
I'm currently running AD08R's which are good but not as sticky so I'll be interested to see the difference when I go for the extreme's.

Personally I'm a bit sceptical about the quality of the extremes, being remoulds some have reported large weight differences between tires in a set - what carcass/construction are you actually getting? I'm sure they would be quicker than NS2R 120 (which I'm using) however... My money would still be on R888R talking to competitors in the Midland (unless ofc there's a silly penalty for using 'proper' tyres )

I'm still sceptical too!
The Extremes use R888's and AD08R's etc for the base carcass (unlike maxsport who use any old tyre and hence they're not a stiff tyre and do vary) but you could still obviously get 1 random in a set however Extreme also now sell NK versions which are new carcasses, these are the ones that have been setting good times up here. You can also send away your own tyres to be remoulded which I may do once I've killed my AD08R's.
I'm also hoping to get some scrubbed R888R's for trackdays and maybe compare them on some sprints/hills. Money no object would be great to get all the tyres together and have a proper test!
