Did the slider pins on the front brakes, and got the old pistons out, but I'll be buggered if I can get the new seals in with the pistons! Anyone got any tips?

I drove the ITB Rs to work, Then I drove it home afterwards. Having to tweek the map after the new exhaust and manifold has caused it to run leaner. I am running the laptop in the car to do datalogging then trying to iron out the map to get it into autotune territory. I might get a rolling road session booked in to fine tune it and play with the ignition timing cells.

Hi Folks,
Today I went Sunday Driving. from one end of Cornwall to the other then back again, some of it in the company of 30 other MX5s. A good chance to use the Auto Tune on the ME221. It still leaned out at 4000 Rpm going uphill when I opened the throttle ! so a little bit of manual tuning needed. The dog does not like the new exhaust system as it drones a bit at certain speeds. ( So Does the Wife )

Today together with 24 other, mostly quicker driven, MX5's I spent a lovely dry day driving around traffic cones at Kemble airfield. This week I got it MOT'd and gave it a good clean and polish. I'd post a nice shiney photo but 1. Its teatime and 2 I'm knackered.

Finally got it running. Got the first bit of paperwork to get it legally on the road, and loaded it up this evening ready for tuning tomorrow.

Bit of brake fluid on the seals and pistons? I had done that before, and was away on hols for a week so just got back to it last night. I decided to stop fighting with the one piston I couldn't get the seal in for and do the other one instead. With a clear head and a bit more patience, it went in quite easily in the end. So with confidence restored I set about re-doing the first one. Couldn't get the piston out by pulling, so had to blow it out with compressed air, which worked once I'd got a half decent seal on it. Something flew across the garage at the same time it went pop, but I haven't worked out what it was yet!
Cleaned up the caliper a bit more, gave it a dab of brake fluid on the seal and piston, took my time and got it in eventually. So then I mounted the passenger side caliper back on, with new disc and pads. Nice. Then went to do the driver's side and found that the piston wasn't retracted far enough to get over the new pads and disc. Pressing on it didn't work, so I'll need to get a piston rewind tool I think. Should have the fronts done and on by the time of the rally on Friday, but the missus has tested positive for Covid, so if I do too I won't be doing the rally anyway, or the sprint at Hethel on Sunday

Got all the new brake stuff fitted last night. The reluctant front caliper piston went back in easily with the rewind tool, so I fitted the new bigger rear calipers too, along with the braided lines from scottydugg. Had to hack away at the dust shields to allow the bigger discs to fit, and getting the hard brake lines off the original rubber hoses was a bit of a fight, but I got there in the end. Just need to add new fluid and bleed them and it's done. The only unsatisfying thing was that I couldn't get the passenger side hose out of the bracket where it meets the hard pipe, so the braided hose end is just cable-tied to the bracket, rather than going through it. Something to tidy up when I have more time perhaps.

Are we supposed to tow with the driven wheels off the ground?? They’re not… lol I think my choice of language has failed and been somewhat ambiguous... Perhaps ' Aren't we supposed to tow with the driven wheels off the ground??' would have been better!

Not strictly 5 related, but could be relevant to owners with later models. Fixed the after cat lambda on my mr2, it was showing a check engine warning light. Code reader revealed it was a failed pre heater in the lambda, a £6 resistor bridging the two heater wires fools the ecu.
Lambda sensor works perfectly.
