Yesterday I replaced the passenger door lock solenoid on my NC, whilst fiddling with the drop glass I discovered I had potentially been driving around for six months with the passenger door not locking. Never checked it, always assumed it was locking…. Cracking service from RRD spares, next day delivery, excellent part and properly packaged, not a taped up bin liner, oh, and sweeties inside too.

Tried out a Sparco Sprint today, I don't fit, I'd need the L version but it won't clear the door bars - so that's put that to bed. Took the car a quick run and almost got gassed from the exhaust with the roof down - anyone know if a wind-blocker helps reduce this?
Can't tie down the tuner to commit to a date for finalising the tune, so I think the 5 won't make the road trip - a 3 day shakedown with 7 hours of driving each - I'd of liked to get a lot more miles on it beforehand, bit disappointed in all honesty - will need to secure another car.

I am confuddled - you are getting 'splashback' from the exhaust while sitting in the driver's seat? Could you have a exhaust gas leak at one of the exhaust joints / gaskets under the bonnet?

Yes, with the roof down I'm getting exhaust fumes when stationary, stop start traffic is very bad, moving and with the hardtop on it's not really an issue. Tuner has it running on the rich side, which could be the source of my problems? I think I have a slight leak on the turbo/down-pipe join - or I did before I tightened everything down again. Splashback is a good phrase for it. I do notice people who tailgate tend to drop back eventually.

Started putting out feelers to see if anyone is interested in it as a whole, or if it'll need split for parts. I think that's probably it decided for the Mazda. A lot of big things happening this year and a 30 year old project car is the least of my worries. If anyone is interested in it as a whole let me know, or it'll go up in parts incrementally when I have time.

I asked about some mates who also do what I do & no one gets fumes. Must be a leak somewhere? I got it on my TVR when I’d put the manifold back together & it hadn’t quite sealed properly.

Think I found a leak at the slip joint for the flexi on the down pipe, removed it and added some exhaust paste to see if that'll resolve it. Could also be that the tune is on the rich side which isn't helping matters. I'll check all the bolts in the engine bay again, thanks for asking about.

I changed the boots on the upper suspension arm ball joints that I've still not fitted. One was a bit torn and the other must have been the same age, so I changed them both - they are the IL Motorsport ball joints so there's a repair kit sold by MX5parts. They have grease nipples on the top so you can pump grease through without dismantling them, which seems like a good idea. Anyway, I've been meaning to swap in these new arms (and some lower arms) for ages, but haven't found a big enough gap between events to make sure I don't get stuck with the job half done, so will probably do it on the extra day off we get on 19 June. I've got a set of MeisterR coilovers to fit so will have a fun day wrestling with rusty bolts!
I'm going to try to set the alignment as well. Getting a laser tracking thingy and will pick up a camber gauge in the next few weeks too.

I put my racing wheels on ready for a sprint at the weekend. Hope the weather stays dry, would be just my luck if it tipped it down! I also tried to stop the hard top from squeaking when going over bumps etc, tightened up the brackets and put some silicone grease on the rubbery bits to see if that will make any difference.
Oil level was down to about the low mark on the dipstick, but not a lot has been coming out underneath the car, so I'm not sure where it's going, it didn't seem as smoky on startup the other day. If it's leaking out of the rear main seal I presume the clutch would start smelling and slipping? There's a bit of oil around the front of the engine too but not the litre that's gone missing.
I also checked the camber, seems like it's on about -1.5 degrees at the front and -2.0 degrees at the back. I've got some new alignment bolts for both ends and I'd like to get it set up properly once I've put the new coilovers and replacement control arms on next month. Haven't checked the tracking/toe yet as the laser gauge needs a bit more space than I've got either side of the car in the garage, might get a chance over the weekend.

Adjusted the clutch push rod a tad more on my NC, a lot easier this time, I used an O BA open ended spanner instead of a 10mm, much shorter, so I could get more of a turn on the rod. All I need now is a cure for my back!

I decided to bite the bullet and start putting the replacement front control arms on. My next event is a rally on 2 June but I can always go in the Subaru if I run out of time, my next sprint isn't until 17 June so it should all be done by then.
Covered all the bolts on the front end with Aerokroil and started undoing the drivers side - took off the brake caliper/disk, got the upper and lower ball joints undone, took off the ARB droplink and undid the bottom bolt of the coilover, so should be able to get that out next time and attack the big bolts at the inner ends of the control arms. The rubber bushings look in a pretty bad state, presumably as they are the original 32 year old ones!

Did some more wrestling last night - got all the long bolts out that hold the arms in place, then had to put them back in to hold the assembly enough to be able to get the hub/bearing out. Coilover came out nicely but the track rod end ball(ache)joint put up a bit more of a fight. Was hoping not to have to replace them but they are old and tired like me, so I've ordered some replacements. Annoying that I didn't notice on Tuesday and order them at the same time as the hubs! Ran out of time to get the upper and lower balljoints separated from the steering knuckle, will go back into battle tonight and that'll be everything off. Definitely not going to get both sides done by next Friday!

Hi
Did you get the R package track rod ends with a different swan neck for lowered suspension ??
Fitted to the Mk1 Bilstien equiped cars.
They help to mitigate Bumpsteer. I bought two pairs when I had two Rs Ltds
I might still have an unused set in the spares stock as I sold one of the cars which still had good originals.
I fitted extended lower ball joints onto the front of the ITB Monster which gives more negative camber without being silly. ( car in my Avatar pic )
Cheers Dickie.

Fitted a new mohair hood, the old one which I bought for £30 from an auto jumble 8 years ago finally gave up the ghost. Pain in the rear canoe to fit with a rollbar though, and was a bastard to get latched the first time. I'll leave it up to stretch whilst I'm away for a few weeks. I also replaced the driver's window regulator (windy up type) which is a massive improvement.

considering buying new Mazda rear / top wishbones, I've bought new oem for all other positions so it'd be rude not to also reserching 'balljoint' type bushings for the rear / top (inner) positions - nobody lists dimensions of all bushes so I'm manusally reading through listings Rich.
