Finally booked it in for sill repairs a)to sort out on-going rust and b)to rectify the sh*t job done this time last year by a certain so-called engineering firm in Bisley (those incapable of doing bodywork shouldn't purport to do so!). Once I have the feed-back on that I'll be deciding on either refreshing the current engine or dropping another lower mileage one in - anyone have a decent low mileage, long nose 1.6 for sale??

Not today but in the week had it mapped at Skuzzle. Very happy with the drive-ability of it as had a 36-1 trigger wheel put on at the same time. Starting and throttle response is leaps ahead of the standard wheel.

Fitted. 20 minute job, if that. Took me just as long to extract my toolboxes from the back of the cupboard. A set of hose pinch-off clamps, and a pair of hose clip pliers certainly made the job much easier. As did something to extract the fluid from the old tank, before taking it off. Hardly spilled any coolant.

Collected a spare engine to use for a turbo build. It compression tested well and was the right price....so it got humped into the back of the car and taken home to the shed. I bolted it onto the stand and set about whipping the head off it to have a look af the bores....only to find someone has been in at it previously and rounded one of the head bolts off. In their infinite wisdom they had also seen fit to slather the other bolts in copperslip, just in case they seized, inside an engine full of hot oil.... Welded another bolt onto the head of the damaged one and removed the lid off the engine. Bores look reasonable with no discernible lip or heavy scoring, just some watermarks from what I can make out from a quick inspection without my glasses. Looks like it's had a 1st oversize rebore.Pistons are marked 25 on the crowns. This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma.....had hoped for good standard bore and Mazda pistons as they would be perfectly strong for the power level I'm aiming for(240bhp) How good the quality of the aftermarket pistons are is anyone's guess,I'll pull the rest of it to bits and have a look.

(lastnight) connected an Elloit tacometer to the car's loom, this was to test the engine's tacometer signal would trigger the tacometer (to many uses of tacometer??) so, success the car operated the new/old Elliot 0-10K tacometer so future bogde, sorry, I mean Modification is to adapt a spare dash cluster to accept the diferent guage, might even go for a 'real' oil-pressure and water temperature guage conversion as I've a few in the garage / mess / stash / hoarding I know the bezel looks pink but i think it was red once all this because the Elliot has a 'tell-tale' recall function (see the switch used to test, will be a press-button), usefull to check on how the mrs. is driving Rich.

Replaced the brake pads today. The Hawks that were on there were brilliant but very squeaky when cold and it was getting on my nerves. I've fitted some EBC Yellow Stuff pads now instead which will be good enough for road use. Might swap them back for the Llandow track day though! I also got to use my new socket set and torque wrench

Impressive tools! Hope you get on with the yellowstuff pads, most people I know take them out - quickly. Please be careful.
Good choice of tyre too.

Thanks Yes, I will be very careful with the YellowStuff pads. They seem a bit Marmite, either people love them or hate them! Not used them before so thought they might be worth a try. I'm loving the Yokos, they held up very well on track recently.

I’ve never tried it on a MX5, but on other cars I’ve had a bit of copper slip on the back of the pad where it’s in contact the piston or mount normally stops squeal.
