I had a Pug 306 (GTi6) which was one of the best cars I've ever had and a 307 that was the single worst I've ever had. I've currently got a Civic as a daily and it's absolutely brilliant.

So we ended up going for a Focus in the end - I looked at all the options you guys suggested (thanks!), but in the end it really came down to what was available in the local area (no sense in driving long distance for a £500 car).
Seems in reasonable nick, no rust, engine pulls well with no smoke, no noisy wheel bearings etc.
Needed a service but after putting in some new oil and filters it all seems sweet. I was actually genuinely quite surprised by what £500 will buy you.

Soooooo, how is your £500 banger going?
Missus announced that she hates driving the 5 yet has previously said that she likes it.
Women.
Anyway, might well be spending more Canoeing money on another car to keep her quiet....

depending on how much you need to haul, a starlet may be too small. corolla or carina estate tho...

I am interested in the equivalent of an starlet estate. would be the perfect hauler.
can fit 4 15 " wheel and tyres in mine with the rear seats down tho. so it is already quite good.

I've heard these are quite good, sound mechanically, have sharp handling and generally on a less bland side of hatchback scale, the only issue is rust. If sills and arches are still strong should be a good un.

Anything with a 1.9Tdi VW engine I would rate (avoid 150hp). I don't think there is much out there that beats them for reliability/mpg/performance. My misses has a PD130 Golf and its been bullet proof, returns awesome MPG no matter how you drive it and are super easy to look after.

Yup agreed, I bet VAG wish they had kept with that engine rather than the 2.0tdi, which as we discovered, is nowhere near as economical as claimed!

Yup agreed, I bet VAG wish they had kept with that engine rather than the 2.0tdi, which as we discovered, is nowhere near as economical as claimed! I'm a great fan of the older vag tdi engines, specifically the pre-PD 90hp ones as fitted in the mk3 golf era cars. can find a mk3 golf tdi for less than £500 and they go no fi=orever mecanically (body can rust...) I have converted my mk2 golf with an ahu 90hp tdi, it can return 65mpg & has cruise control, 90mph is @ 3,000rpm my t4 also has the same conversion (40-50mpg but 60mph @ 3,000rpm ) and I also have a 1989 B3 Passat that also has the same conversion as my mk28-) totally opposite to my '91 Eunos that is terrible on fuel (~20-25mpg?) and if I eventually finish my rallycar Chevette HS then I expect that to be in single-figures Rich. (OK, I've got too many cars!)
