the horn should only need one wire, since the whole boss and QR should be earthed via the chassis because it is on the steering shaft.
the live will the wire attached to a ring at the back of the boss (where it gets a feed from a sprung contact)
usually the only issue is what style of connection is on the wire vs what the QR is wired for.. in which case you switch it from a male spade to female spade...

does shorting the 1 wire from the rear of the boss against the boss causes the horn to sound ?

At the moment it is all back in the box. I am driving around with the new wheel fitted but no horn and no QR. I will have a fiddle again next week after replacement parts and new wires have been purchased. If I get time.
As I recall, yes the one wire against the hub made the horn sound.

What is the fastest possible way to disable the boot release on a mk1 from inside the centre console?
(Mine is a UK 1.8, no central locking, just basic key).
I have searched and found solutions which leads to hours spent taking the car apart, filing locks, all sorts. There has to be a super fast method!
Thanks!

Or more seriously, it must be simple to take off the cover behind the boot catch and just disconnect the cable at that end.

I'm fairly sure that's just a wire being pulled by the lever. Disconnect the wire.

Haha, just finished doing this. I answered my own question and it was the same as yours - undo two bolts, remove ball on wire, job done! Thanks anyway

I worked out how to make my horn work. Just ordered a longer countersunk m3 screw so I can make a modification to the horn earthing. So until that arrives, 99% there.
I have the NRG quick release fitted. It is a nice distance from me. The indicators can be moved without much of a finger stretch. I wouldn't want it any closer to me (with respect to the indicators), but it is nice that it is a little closer from a pure driving perspective. It means I can have the seat well back for more leg room, yet the wheel is close enough to offer zero effort in reaching out for it and controlling the steering perfectly. It feels rock solid and safe. Not super easy to release, but good enough. At least it gives a sense of feeling safe.
Now I can remove the wheel when I am out and lock it in the boot. Plus the centre console boot release is now disengaged of course.

glad it's gone in. the QR's lockin/release need a few goes to bed in and smooth out because it is a friction design.
did you have to trim a little of the rubber off the front of the gaiter / hub surround ? I forgot to mention that.
would have been about 3-5mm, which would otherwise foul the QR release operation.
