My car has developed the annoying HLA rattle, changed oil and filter (after some wynns lifter fluid and italian tuneup) but the rattle is still there between 2.5k - 3.5krpm. I know that this is not catastrophic but occasionally it sounds like a diesel!! I think its probably a cams out rebuild but I am going to see whether this weekends shenanigans followed by another oil change may help. Any other good ideas?
BTW apart from that its going as well as it ever has, good oil pressure & nice steady temp.

what oil did you change to ?
I don't know why I seem to think this, but apparently a high quality fully synthetic can help resolve it. If you just put in semi, it might not be good enough.

Yep, I can testify that this definitely helps! I changed from 10W40 semi-synthetic to 0W40 fully-synthetic (Mobil1) and it more or less cured my lifter tick. It occasionally still ticks now, but much less than before and the engine sounds much smoother generally too. I also did a "safe" engine flush first - I put in some new oil, ran it for 200 miles then drained it again and put in the Mobil1. I decided not to go with the engine flush additive route since there are some claims of it doing more harm than good.

Are you sure it's hla noise? Very unusual that you should only hear it at certain revs, usually it would be at its most noticeable when idling when the oil pressure is lower and there is less engine noise to drown it out. Is the engine standard? And does the throttle position/engine load influence the noise?

Exhaust leaks can tick like a canoe... but this sounds like it is louder than that. Maybe it's resonance and there's something loose?

I think I have explored all the other options, It does sound more like a rattle but on tickover I can hear something but not as loud as at 3k - which is why i initially thought it was a rattle - it appears to be coming from the back exhaust side (cyl 4) but I will check again to see if it is a leaking exhaust tick, not long ago I had the exhaust off. Plenty of experts around on saturday to have a listen!!

Could be exhaust heat shield?

I havent had a chance to test drive yet, but investigation might indicate a small exhaust blow, I hope so!

I have HLA rattle at the mo, but only really noticeable at tick over, even after a spirited drive. I do know however I need an oil change, so going to use mob 1 fully synth as that seemed to help on my last 5. Surprised you could hear it at the revs you mentioned, so hopefully just the zorst like you mentioned.

So after further investigation it seems to be a combination of a small exhaust blow and my heat shield That's good news 😀

If you just put in semi, it might not be good enough. Yeah this is always problematic.
