My 1.6 Mk1 is running like total prarrie canoee.
I've been around the engine so many times and I can't for the life of me pin point or fix the issue.
Those of you at the Krispy Kreme meet will have heard what sounds to be a very bad sounding rotary-esq noise coming from my car.
Basically the car won't hold a solid idle when hot or cold, started a while ago, but I have had time to take the car off the road to try and get to the bottom of it.
It will occasionally hold idle around 900RPM but the engine runs lumpy.
Plugs and leads are fine, tried moving the idle control screw around but I can't get it settle or behave properly still. Airbox and MAF seem fine, and I can't find any vacuum leaks anywhere.
Can't be timing related, as nothing in the engine has come apart, and there isn't any space physically for the belt to jump/skip.
At a total loss, not a clue whats going on, the car is drivable, but its a pain in the ass, and Its drinking fuel as the idle likes to sit at 2k sometimes...
Any ideas?

Hoi!
Things you haven't tried... :-)
O2 Sensor. Maybe someone has a spare STD ECU they can lend you to try.
You could try the diagnostic box, which requires a paperclip and an LED, iirc.

Code is no.17 so supposedly bugged lambda sensor 🙄 Gonna try bodge a 4 wire one from my breaker into the two wire harness

Yeah ECU is going to be my next guess, although, I;ve got a feeling that it might be a bad ground that messing with the lambda, will continue to investigate!
In other news I made my car park strut brace more pretty!

I assumed you would have checked all the grounds, if not I suggest buying a metre of heavy duty electrical earth lead crimping some ends on and bolting one engine to chassis, and an extra battery to chassis. I had a similar problem on my old 1.6 - this cured it

ECU connectors are fine, Grounds are fine.
Currently testing rear temp sensor, but that is reading fine on my meter too....
The quest continues

Update!
Car now seems relatively fine when its up to temperature, but still, when its cold the idle is all over the place, I'm also getting some hesitation (feels like a misfire) when I let off the throttle.......
Starting to run out of ideas now.

Is it fuel related? Injectors, FPR? Just a thought
