Everyone thinks its great but i think its a con. Its just to keep up with inflation. Sky has gone up 5 pound per month. Everything else has too. Council tax up by 8 pound a month.

I'm not on minimum wage but I'm paid hourly so my rate goes up in line with others in the business who are paid hourly. It means I'm better off by about £84 a month.
But like you say council tax has gone up 4 quid a month, water rates have gone up 4 pence and don't get me started on my 62 quid a month virgin bill. Must phone them and cancel and hope retentions give me a deal.

To be fair, we're always skint. But a couple holidays a year, two cars and our standard of living is generally pretty good, we could cut back on a lot... but I'd rather live than scrimp and save. I only regret racking up as much debt as I did when I was younger because it could have easily covered a hefty mortgage deposit. Short of moving in with my parents for a year we are a bit stuck in a renting trap. Ho Hum that's my rant for the day over.

I honestly don't think the 'norm' everyone's gotten used to (of living away from their parents) is even a norm at all. It's a fairly recent (since +-60 years ago) phenomenon. Post-war building boom, population growth, modern economy .... If you looked at how people used to live before the 60s you'd see it was much closer to family/parents and the support they gave freely (that is to say, not for money) in return for mutual support when they needed it. Since the 60s a sort of financialization (giving everything a monetary value so you can pay for it/sell it) (and the related debt trap/rent trap ) has replaced the reliance on extended family/community. Modern Life, as advertised, involved racking up canoe-tons of debt and forgetting where you came from. If anything I think the obvious response is to return to keeping it in the family, community, mates, etc. Rebuild/grow that trust. Factoids: Something like 70% of americans can't put their hand on 1K USD of savings. See www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/2016/10/09/savings-study/91083712/ - I bet the UK isn't much different. In the last few months I've lent £££s to mates to temporarily cover their rent (was paid back, thankfully, but.. WTF). I read some very bleeding-edge blogs and there is definitely blood in the water. Hold fast, eh. 30% discount offered on new cars ? Used to be hard enough getting a 5% discount.

Byeeee virginmedia.
2mbps Internet all week has forced me to cancel.
Say hello to sky Q, boxsets and all the channels except sport and movies for 15 quid a month less than I was paying. That'll keep the missus happy with a fancy box in her room as well.
Cunts still tried to sell me stuff when I phoned them to cancel tho.

Cancel the tv subscription and buy yourself an Amazon Fire stick... Then install kodi on. Best thing I've done for my to viewing since hdmi ports on laptops!

Yup I've got an Nvidia shield, beast of a tv box. We just don't use it that much really. Jayne likes to watch TV in the bedroom while I'm playing games or listening to music in the front room, while kodi is great for movies I couldn't use it for TV. She certainly doesn't have the patience to find a good source on it. LoL

I got so sick of them too :-) switched to vodafone broadband (the old bulldog/cable and wireless network) VDSL. very low contention residential 76mbit. Sadly still with VM for the TV but dean's firestick/kodi thing sounds interesting...

Kodi is great, it's just a bit.. clunky even with a good build on it.
I only got virgin in the first place just for the Internet, but eventually we added tv and multiroom etc. Was a good price until the discount ended then far too pricey considering the old tivo box is crap, in the bedroom we have the old vhd box which can't access stuff on the main box etc.
Was paying 63 a month but I've got sky for 48, saving me a few quid and hopefully getting a better service don't use the Internet that much anymore anyway so the 20mb fibre should do us.

virgin had *terrible* contention at 8pm->10pm. drove me nuts with poor latency, dropped packets, and regular price rises.
