Hi there. I am in the process of replacing doorcards. The new doorcards I have picked up have a tiny speaker, tweeter thingy? In the top padded trim. I am replacing the door speakers as they are 23 years old when I removed the doorcards literally crumbled to dust. My question is the tiny speakers, do they just wire straight in/connect to the door speakers? Not being an audiophile I'm at a loss. I only really use radio/CD thing if stuck in traffic on motorway. Also what controls the loudness/quality of the sound? Is it the speakers or the radio/CD bit?

They're called Tweeters.. They were standard on some of the models. But I'm not an audiobodge, I await an audiobodger to enlighten further.

Hi! Most component systems (with seperate woofers [large] and tweeters [small]) have a crossover which filters the signal coming through and sends the high frequencies to the tweeters and the low frequencies to the woofers. This is basically a little box with one set of incoming terminals for the signal coming from the radio, and two sets of terminals for the woofer and tweeter. The crossover normally comes as part of a set when buying component speakers, as in this example: JBL Component Set but you can buy them individually. Some tweeters are designed to not need a crossover, in which case it would just be wired directly to the terminals on your woofer as you say above. Normally the documentation about the tweeters will say if a crossover is required or not. You will get better audio quality if you use a crossover though. As for loudness/quality, there are a lot of factors which affect this. Having a good quality headunit with plenty of power (watts) is a good place to start, the cheaper ones usually aren't very powerful and will start to distort pretty quickly when you turn the volume up, especially if you listen to music with lots of bass (eg. electronic music). I would say this is more important than the speakers, but good speakers also do make a difference to the audio quality. Another very important point to audio quality is the environment where the speaker is placed. A hifi speaker sounds good because the speaker box has been specifically designed to tune and amplify the sound of the speaker and reinforce the bass (like a musical instrument). Doors (especially in the MX5) are not very good environments for good quality audio because they aren't designed acoustically. So typically you will get sound which lacks punch and sounds tinny. You can improve things somewhat by adding acoustic padding inside the door and sealing off as many of the holes as possible (unfortunately there are a LOT of holes!) The less sound that can escape around the speaker, the better it will sound.

Well, I might have been able to usefully reply to this, but Meerkat has got it in the bag...

Aah! Ok. Well just had a look at the head unit thing. Is just a cheap Kenwood 50w CD/radio so about Ā£25 brand new. Speakers I bought were JVC 620x so just cheapies. Will just trim wire of the tweeter things and tape up save any faffing.
Cheers chaps, Oni.

Cheers chaps, Oni. Kenwood is a reasonable brand, but yeah 50w is bit low on power so probably won't sound great. I have JVC speakers in my doors and to be honest they're not bad. If you upgraded your headunit and put some sound dampening in the doors you'd get a reasonable (if not earth-shattering) sound.

Well I received speakers today. Had to drill holes in the doors to fit them which was a tad annoying. Sound comes out of them so all good I think. Will test them tomorrow, chuck some slipknot and korn through them to see what they sound like.

Yes š One of the very few riffs I have actually learned to play. Freak on a leash one of my favourites even if it was somewhat mainstream. I think NIN will be the real test haha. Found a mini upgrade to the head unit, an early 90's double din kenwood. Will fit with the oldish look of my 5. Oni.

I've played in bands since I was 14 and still going now I'm (a lot) older! So hearing that Korn and Limp Bizkit are touring together goes to show you've gotta keep playing! BTW Don't Fred and Jonathan hate each other?
