Or "everyone loves topless action!!" I thought I'd start this thread as a counter to a more negative version elsewhere!! I drove into asda car park and noticed a couple getting into a mk2 with the roof down, pulled in next to them and we had a nice little chat, easy to do when you're both "topless". This has also heppened to me with other people either in a traffic queue or a filling station, not necessarily other 5 owners, I get comments like "Nice car My dad/mum/brother/sister etc has one of those, great fun. My wife won't let me have one!" And so on
I don't thing I've ever had any negativity with the top down (Apart from an incident where I was TBH being a hooligan!)
Any other positive experiences ?

Not in the 5 but back when I had the Caterham I came out of a restaurant to find two Japanese girls in it. Sod's law that happens to me when I only have a 2 seater

top down should always mean smiles. Even when other people are angry with you and holding gardening shears.

All the waves. Especially from Gold Leaf Lotus Elans! I have seen 3 different ones while out and about and all waved madly

With the top down I've had blokes giving the thumbs up and saying things like "great car". A lady came over to chat to me about it too. Generally kids look on with approval.
I've only had one idiot van driver: I pulled onto a motorway, then into the outer lane to overtake. Knuckle dragged some 30 meters back eventually wheezed up to me and gave it Solo Canoeist signs and "get out of my way" signs, as if I were holding up a van lol. So I dropped down to 40 to make him wait, dropped to second and vanished into triple digits. Probably took him five minutes to get up to speed again all due to pointless rudeness. Never saw him again.

I always found it quite a pleasant experience going out in the Z3 - topless always!
Changing lanes on the motorway in slow traffic, just turn around to look and smile, so often met with a return smile and being let into a gap. Easier to wave to folks too, and just shout a thanks when folks let you out.
Looking foward to getting a 5, there are a few folks drive them round here.

Yep, I definitely seem to have mainly positive experiences when I'm out with the roof down. People let me out of junctions, make space for me when changing lanes or give me a smile or thumbs up at traffic lights.
I was parked up on a residential street one morning, waiting for a friend of mine, when a middle-aged gent with a spaniel and a newspaper walked past and gave me a cheery "Good morning!"
Even teenage kids tend to say things like "nice car mate" rather than "w@nker"
That's the thing about the 5, particularly the NA, it's a convertible but it's not pretentious like the German ones or obnoxious like the American ones.

i find top down works best when you have a silly hat on! Many approving nods. In my head, all the ladies want me and the dudes want to be me..
..in reality, it looks like my mum has dressed a 30+ yr old me

Top down on other MX5 caused me guilt and shame for having mine up. Easily rectified next set of lights though

I caught a very similar looking car later on on the motorway ... it had the roof up ... I am choosing to assume that this was a different car and my hero didnt put the roof up for the motorway

Have I been a bit keen with putting my hard top on for the winter already?
If it's not raining and the missus isn't in the car the roof is normally down.
