Looking at a neighbour's Golf's tyres recently I was pretty surprised to see them below the legal limit. I suggested he visit F1 Autocentres here in Reading as their prices are pretty good - they charged him £65 each for a pair of Coopers compared to National Tyres own brand at c.£100 per tyre! Whilst he was there he succumbed to their "best to check the tracking" offer. Long story short he's just completed his THIRD visit and thinks they've sorted it - first it pulled left with no steering input, then it steered right and now he reckons it's OK - which I find hard to believe if they f*ucked up twice before. So be careful who you choose to tinker with your tracking. You could do worse than visit The Wheel Alignment Centre in Southampton who really know what they're doing... Cheers, Pewe

I was told by someone a long time ago that a properly set-up car should automatically track very gently to the left, so that if you happened to fall asleep at the wheel the car would eventually end up on the shoulder rather than in oncoming traffic. Not sure if there is any merit in that though since there are so many other variables which would come into play.

Big thumbs up for WAC in southhampton. Occasionaly a euromaster is good but their equipment isn't always nice to 'shiney' wheels. As usual... always try and go independent. I can also recommend at least one branch of merit tyre (Wallington, South London) - they checked my tracking for free. it was in spec. They didn't bother changing anything. I tipped them :-) Tracking is bloody important and doubly so in winter, since it has its most extreme effect when there is traction loss IMO / if you ignore the tyre wear factor.

Roads are slightly cambered to the left for water to run off so a car should always pull very slightly to the left anyway.

Yep, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially since if you did fall asleep you'd be more likely to go off on a bend or pull the wheel down with your hand as you nodded off

the best real-world check of tracking is the straight highway / how much effort needed to keep the car "straight" test. it should roll over the camber nicely and definitely not pull to one side or the other as long as the brakes are ok and especially when they are applied.
