Dont need Bupa ... still got the NHS for now... No way to bargain up on the salary? even if you can get it back to 4% short that would make the jump easier. It all sounds like a pretty good idea if you think there is a good chance to be happier ... no way to put that into £'s. Besides you clearly earn plenty given the rate you are buying MX5 rustboxes ... Good points Clem. On the last one, I buy them cheap. Also living in basingstoke in a shoe box means our mortgage payments are on the rather small side leaving me to fritter money away on rusty japanese sports cars. I was joking I am about to lose more on my MX5 than your last few cost ... My main point is that if you have enough to be happy and pay your mortgage without worry (and take Mrs Horne to dinner) then thats all you need. Better than slaving away in a job you aint happy at

Actually a very nice clear logical essay Horney. Nout wrong with your thinking. FWIW what sort of stuff are you selling ?

(FWIW, anyone else thinking of changing their job, it's a great format to work with, as long as you are willing to be hard nosed about the facts)

I faced similar situation with the job I have currently taken, chose the lifestyle change, turned down a ~20k differential in base and smaller bonus to be closer to home, have less stress and more time to myself, it's actually worked out quite well for my personal goals of get healthier, be happier. The first few weeks though it was hard to shake that what the feck have I done feeling, first payslip didn't help either but I think when you have a choice there is always that the grass is greener thing.

It's hard to put a value on the reduction of stress, but suffice to say it is a lot more than 8% of base.
COngratulations on getting the offer too.

Take the job, the lack of bonus and stress / tying of knots with current company sounds like its a never going to fix its self.

Congratulations on getting the offer Nick. I also like to think about moves in a similar way. Finding it very hard to justify leaving my current place purely on the commute. Most other places that would have me would add 30minutes each way to it, which, if I value my time at £25/hr (well, why not? )it means I need a £5k payrise to even break even and justify the move. I then value my colleagues and friends at an arbitrary £5k as well, I hate putting a number on something like that but it's the incentive I'd need to make new friends and then things like boss, he's worth another £5k as there's no guarantee I'd get another as good as him. So already I'm at £15k more just to move without factoring in the amazing canteen, the great culture and the fact that my team is 75% party animal females under 30. It would have to be a great job to pull me away

Given your current employment is giving you grief with no prospect of it changing and the new job has greater earnings potential I'd say go for it. Loss of private health would cause me mild concern though you could still buy your own - it's having the unexpected fixed quickly rather than being put on a waiting list and jeopardising your earnings you need to consider. See my PM. BOL. Cheers, Pewe.

Took the job, signed the contract and waiting for a signed copy back before I hand in my notice today. Eeeek!

Congrats mate!
I made a similar move about 4 years ago - was earning more at the previous job but the stress and being constantly on call 7 days a week was killing me. I quickly readjusted my budgeting to suit the slightly lower salary and within a few months I didn't even notice it. But the reduction on my stress levels and the improvement in my confidence was immeasurable.
So anyway, definitely sounds like you're making the right choice.
