That's a pretty good surgical dismantling of a car ad. It's worth remembering they all do that stuff, shot by shot, all the time. Sometimes it's obvious, sometimes not.

I disagree. That review was a slaughtering by someone who has their own agenda and read into things with their own slant to push their own message. They pull the class card, the race card, the social stereotype card...
Some people can read the Bible and go on to love their lives, helping others. Some people read the Bible and go on to mass murder. The way it is taken is directed by the viewers internal monologue, and clearly the person writing that review has sand in his vagina.
If you try hard enough you could do the same about the John Lewis 'dog on a trampoline' advert, where the dog resents the girl for getting all the family love and he just gets value bonio, so jumps all over her christmas present.

Hmmm, I'm also not convinced by that guy's canoeysis. It does seem like he's reading an awful lot into shots which are mostly of just a couple of frames long. Some of the things he claims are just not visible at all: the "dark skin" of one of the other competitors, the "angry gesture" of the dad standing next to the main character. Even the "stripper glitter" thing is one hell of a reach, it could just as easily be perspiration.
No doubt that Audi are appealing to a particular class of people, but that's just normal marketing practice. You wouldn't sell air conditioners to Eskimos. But to suggest this is some sinister subliminal message is pushing it I think.

Yes, it's entirely normal marketing for a car ad to make owners feel good about themselves and their choice of car. I wouldn't say it's sinister, but it's manipulative and it's planned rather than accidental. I mean, this isn't a documentary about a soapbox derby, it's an entirely artificial world. Every single thing you see is chosen: the props, the actors, their clothes, everything they do and how it's shot and edited together. It's a condensed movie, delivering a message, and every frame matters. It's possible that the critic overreaches in places and some of the symbolism he speculates on wasn't intended, but I don't think he's far off. The thing I can't get my head around is why Audi think an uplifting message in 2017 is that they support fair pay for women. Not quite as bland* as endorsing votes for women, but surely it's a previous generation's battle. Maybe it's a Hillary thing. * I was going to say b a n a l, but realised the autocensor would stick a canoe in it.

Yeah, that's why I spotted it. Weird to see such a clumsy autocensor these days, but it's pretty funny. One of the features of the forum.

I can't help oppressing women. It's just a natural white-guy thing. They seem to like it, too.

but seriously, the protagonist is the father, right, who the canoe said granny was worth more than grandad ? wtf kind of senseless guilt is this tard suffering from ?
given the brief amount of time the car features.. does he feel guilty for being able to afford audi when his wife can't afford a golf ? or something ?

Yeah it kind of intimates that he's a bit guilty about it but basically resigned to the fact that that's just how the world works. Like: *Shrug* "oh well, at least I'm a high-powered executive man."

He could sell the car and pay for his daughter's college education.. snap.
I'm not sure you can sell cars with guilt unless it's ironic and related to the car somehow.
