I've just read your thread. Wow, what a lot of cars. You nutter I'd sell the lot and just keep the V8. Paint it black. Try and lower the mass as much as possible from the front: carbon bonnet and wings, plastic front window, ditch the dash and heater system, bin the interior plastics and carpet. Cage it. Probably put a heavier then OEM battery in the boot to try and balance it. Also keep a heavy tool kit and full sized spare in the boot. Cool project for you, or likely someone when you sell it.

The V8 is a cool car, but being honest with myself, a V6 is better suited to an MX5. Less weight, better weight balance and if you get the right one, more power. The Honda J is a great option, especially for a track car. The only engine I've seen that I think is better is the LFX, but it's probably a £10k project so it's not an option at the moment. My next car will be an Elise, just an itch I need to scratch ... if I can raise enough money I can keep my green car ... at which point, knowing me, I'll start gathering parts again for the next big build idea ... whatever that is! Only thing I'd ever change to now is either a Caterham for perfect balance, or a Gardener Douglas Cobra - with its stiff space frame spine, plus more roll cage, track brakes and lightweight alloy V8. Or maybe a Roadrunner... which is a cross between the two: caged seven with a V8. A top spec Cobra is way out of my budget. Others more possible. But hardly practical lol. So for now I will just fiddle with the five. Unlike you I only have ONE car. Crazy I know
ps
LFX looks great. But I'd have to ditch the plastic plenum as it looks cheap. Way more money to go that route.

You could buy that and a tent. Who needs a house. Do it.
Does that help?

The V8 has sold, on to another home ... so I now have the deposit for an Elise!
I'd worked it out at about £8k to do the LFX swap, so not going to happen any time soon ... never say never though!!

I suspect £8k wont be nearly enough to do it, even with zero labour or rolling road time. Could be 50% more at the very least even ignoring labour, without doing any calcs. Don't forget you will need to order upgraded shafts at a small fortune alone, plus the dreaded post and import tax. Rear LSD and rear subframe. Upgraded hubs. Different gearbox. Decent clutch. Plus the kit which doesn't seem that comprehensive. Plus an engine from the USA, plus more massive post and import tax. Programmable ECU. Air intake solution. Loads of details. One guy who did it properly had two massive pallets of stuff coming in through customs. Post and import tax alone would be thousands.
Or you could stick to a safer power / torque figure, then you can eliminate loads of the above.
Or as you say, just buy something else haha

An S2000 with a supercharger? Noise was a bit OTT for me, but could be a weapon!
Tailgate McNoIndicate Z4 with a massive diet and improved handling bits?
Ginetta?
Caterham?

You're right if I bought the kit and parts from the US, but I was thinking I'd go a DIY route. The kit from V8roadsters is ok, but it's designed for LHD so it may or may not work so I'd be using it as a source of inspiration only.
Engine and box etc are in stock at a dealer in Kent, subframe from Claire at Crapengineering and then over to a local company I've used before for mock up and making the engine and gearbox mounts, prop etc. The intake I'd make myself it's just the wiring and ECU that I haven't worked out precisely but I know a guy that makes custom ecus and wiring looms for kit cars running modern yank V8s and he was happy he could do it. Back end, I could go Tailgate McNoIndicate, RX7 or Cadillac depending on my power goals. It would take a chunk of time to do, but the design and build phase is more interesting than driving them to me, I'm a bit weird like that I guess!
Either way, that's a project for the future ... maybe ... right now, I have 80% of the cash for my Elise so I'm getting close!
It also looks like I'll be able to keep my green MX5 so I'll try to get that road legal at some point this year in a basic format.

Some interesting options there ... S2000 is a maybe bit too modern, I do really like the shape but not sure how easy they are to modify? Seating position is poor, but I believe there are a few routes to solve that now. Definitely more affordable than an Elise! Z4 I don't like, not sure why but the shape doesn't work for me. Ginetta? Yep, very nice ... G15 for me ideally, but I'm not sure how capable they really are, and I doubt I could afford any of the modern ones Caterham I've done before, not quite useable enough for taking my son swimming etc ... I'd rather stick with full bodied cars Russell

Yeah all your points above kept leading me back to a five. The only things which really excite me AND tick every box are mad money... Cobras mainly

Yeah all your points above kept leading me back to a five. The only things which really excite me AND tick every box are mad money... Cobras mainly I guess what it comes down to is that I'm bored of 5s. I've been messing with them for over 10 years, and had about 50 of them. Mk1, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 (never had a 3.75 though). Had 1.6 engines, 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.6, 3.0, 3.2, 4.0 and 5.0. NA, supercharged, turbo and a twin charged one briefly. I know what they can do, but for the most part I've already done it probably several times. Time for a change! There are lots more cars out there, some cheaper and some more expensive. I'll always have a thing for 5s, but right now I'm tired of being stuck in a box. The atmosphere on the MX5 scene is changing as well, the friendly helpful scene of 5 or 6 years ago is long gone and where I used to be proud of how nice the scene was, now other groups are nicer places to be. Sad, but it seems that this little forum is one of the last places that I feel comfortable on Russell
