After my grey car was consigned to the scrap heap, the hunt was on to buy a clean NA to move my go faster parts on to.
I couldn't find anything decent that didn't get snapped up within seconds or wasn't a stupid amount of money. Luckily our Lord and Saviour, the Illustrious Leader, Emperor Horney was swayed by his Mk3's performance on track and he messaged me literally as I sat down on the sofa with a cup of tea after coming back from yet another unsatisfactory car viewing. My mood went straight from depressed to elated and I agreed to buy the car there and then. (NB. KIDS! Don't buy a car unseen from a stranger on the internet unless you're sure of their MX5 owning/non-bullcanoe talking credentials).
This Saturday I met Horney at Skuzzle to give the car a once over, make a plan with Nick and Marc at Skuzzle, and to give the big man some hard earned cashola (read: move numbers over the internet).
The plan is to basically swap bodies and a bit of wiring, Marc will install the Cusco half cage I also bought from Horney and drill floor holes for my 6 point harness, and keep the rear brakes from this car. This is a bit confusing because I feel like the chassis, subframes, and running gear are what make a car, but actually it's the body. So technically this car is getting new (from the grey car) chassis, subframes, and running gear, rather than the grey car getting a new body.
So we don't have to switch from thread to thread, this will be the spec of this car after the work has been completed:
Engine:
- 1.8 engine stripped down in 2016 and all seals replaced
- full IRTB kit
- Mikumi throttle bodies
- 65mm open trumpets + RamAir slip on double carb filters for trackdays
- 254/254 duration camshafts (exhintake mod)
- 1.6 flywheel and organic clutch
- 4-1 38mm stainless manifold. Modified to suit 2.25" V-Band
- Megasquirt Pnp1 ECU
- all cooling hoses are silicone
- heater hoses are kevlar
- large core radiator
- spal cooling fan
- PU engine mounts
Suspension/Steering/Brakes/Wheels/Tyres:
- HSD Monopro coilovers
- Mazdaspeed 2-way LSD (clutch type made by Kaaz)
- Thicker front ARB
- Adjustable ARB droplinks
- Nitrac 8 groove front discs
- Carbotech XP8 front pads
- ATE Super Blue brake fluid
- Compomotive ML 15x8 ET12
- Federal 595 RSR (need new tyres so deciding whether to get more of these or NS2R or stump up more for A048R again)
Exterior:
- GV rep front splitter
- eBay ducktail spoiler
- Clear side repeaters
- smoked USDM sidelight/indicators
- 7" LED headlights (as per new Jeeps, Defenders, and Harleys)
- front and rear tow eyes
Interior:
- Curley Motorsport carbon fibre bucket seat
- JB Fab side mounts
- Sparco Targa 330mm suede steering wheel
- Daikei gold steering wheel bolts
- DRE RPM and shift lights
- 6 point harness
- Doctor MX5 lower shift boot
- Jass Performance upper shift boot
- eBay suede handbrake and gear gaiters
- Jass Performance shift knob
- fly off handbrake button
- Broadway mirror
The only thing I need is an exhaust, which isn't an easy thing to settle on. At the moment the mani is modified to V-Band to work with the old exhaust. However, the old exhaust is way too loud, at Castle Coombe it made 112dB at the static noise test, and the whole purpose of this car is to do trackdays. So I need something quieter that still sounds good, and then it will have to be modified to work with the current mani.
My exhaust budget is £150-200 but could be a bit more for the right exhaust.
