As boringgit was kind enough to post this in the shoutbox, I thought it was worth posting here for posterity, seeing as it's a question that comes up often!
As I understand it, imports up to 1995 shouldn't be given a Catalytic convertor MOT emissions test because they don't exactly match any vehicle codes on the MOT system, but getting MOT people to understand that is apparently not always easy.
This flowchart should be useful to wave at them, but don't forget that no-one likes to be told how to do their job lol

a similar thread has been going on almonds as you say nobody likes being told to do their job but an MOT needs to be correct - they have a process to follow and they need to do so - it is important, if they are going to skip over this then what else will they decide not to do! I have an email from VOSA (copied from someone else on OC i think) that also gives clarity:- Thank you for your email enquiry dated 5th April 2010 concerning emissions.
There is no exemption from any part of the MOT test purely due to it being an import. The vehicle will still need to meet the criteria set out in the MOT inspection manual for car and Light commercial Vehicles.
However, some imported vehicles aren't listed in the In Service Exhaust Emission Standards for Road Vehicles' book as we aren't supplied limits from the manafacturers.
When the tester carries out the emissions part of the MOT test they should follow the flow chart in section 7.3 of the MOT Inspection Manual for car and Light Commercial Vehicles'. As your vehicle was first used between 1st August 1992 and 31st July 1995 and there isn't an exact match for the vehicle then it would be required to go through a non CAT test and meet the following limits.
CO< = 3.5% HC < 1200PPM
I can confirm that the Mazda Eunos Roadster isn't listed in the emissions book.
Ihope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Kind Regards,
VOSA Contact Centre Operations Directorate Tel;0300 123 9000
I sent this to VOSA for my MOT last month and asked for them to confirm this was still correct and it was, I showed it to by tester and my 95 import passed with a decat (irony is I have just put the cat back on!!)

Stickied this. Certainly useful for people who have an import registered as an MX5. Also note I believe a UK car upto '92 also does a pre cat test.

Also do note that the changeover date in both '92 and '95 is 1st August, so it matches the change in registration plates. UK cars up to J-reg can run without a cat, but from K-reg on they must have one for the MOT. Likewise M-reg is the last Roadster which doesn't need to be inspected for the presence of a cat, and N-reg onwards must have one.

I ran my uk spec k reg with a decat and it went through 2 mots - at the time I knew nothing of this issue - just got lucky I think!!

Maybe lucky or maybe it was a legitimate pass. Up until about 2012 you only needed to pass the emissions test for a cat-equipped car, you didn't necessarily have to have a cat fitted too. I suppose the car might just about pass HC and CO emissions without a cat. Not sure about that though.

Just stumbled across this thread and would like to blow off some steam here! Took the father in laws 1993 Eunos in for a test and it was given a basic emissions test and failed, no further test performed. I found and read all the info in the flow chart and it seems they are in the wrong but when i approached them they claimed as it had a cat fitted it had to go through a cat test. I will have to take the car elsewhere now as im not willing to argue my case with them or report them, i will have to make it clear when i go to the new station about the problem. Seems ridiculous some of these testers dont know their rear canoe from their elbow.

Where I live I actually get a small discount on the test cost because there is no CAT
