So i notice when driving hard (autosolo) the PAS reservoir seems to chuck out a fair bit of fluid - i would imagine that doing a lot of direction changes causes the PS oil to get hot, expand and blow out the top. Any solutions 1 - better PAS fluid? 2 - better seal on the PAS reservoir dipstick/plug thingy? (i have replaced the o ring and added an extra one!) 3 - is my PAS failing and causing the problem (ie dragging in air from somewhere)? - hope not!

Standard behaviour on a MK1 for AutoSolos. It's cavitation in the fluid from the quick direction changes. Do you find the PAS comes and goes?
I looked into trying to solve this for quite a while but never got anywhere other than the option of depowering the rack.

I have just bought the better quality ATF dextron iii fluid which has better heat/cavitation resistance - i am informed. I have also put a better o ring seal on the cap! Not so many direction changes next weekend at Combe (at least i hope so!!) next solo is April 9th so will test then, or find an empty car park somewhere!

I've tried various options to stop the inconsistent steering weight caused by cavitation during solos...
Sock on reservoir to prevent dripping Replaced all of the fluid with Redline ATF Replaced reservoir cap with Maruha uprated one
Uprated seal (as per Maruha) stops the mess but doesn't stop the cavitation, and to top it off I think it's been putting additional stress on the pump as that's began making the odd noise recently.
Depowered rack will be happening very soon.

Has nobody tried fitting a better PAS oil cooler? I'd certainly do that before depowering the rack.

Just depower the rack, problem solved. I can't see any advantage of PAS over manual, except that it takes a bit less physical effort to park. Plenty of disadvantages though.

my mk3 did it also, would boil over and you would get the steering going heavy, I popped some slick50 power steering fluid in just to top it up as it was all that I could find, it has not done it since, the steering got a touch heavier with it too, feels good.

I don't like the idea of depowering the rack as I use my car a lot in the summer for general driving about plus my wife borrows it and would not be happy! I'll report back after the next solo on the updated fluid

I haven't personally, but I know of some local drifters who have and have had positive results. Believe it's down to having a larger fluid capacity in the system which assists with the cavitation issue, as opposed to any genuine requirement for cooling.

So a larger PS fluid reservoir - now that is a workable solution - I might start having a look at that - there room to fit a bigger reservoir in

First things first - i will try the slightly larger i think mk2.5 PS reservoir then if no improvement join 2 reservoirs

In my experience, the Mk 2.5 suffers the same issue.

seconded the mk2.5 reservoir isn't any better. suggest a nice sock, thicker fluid and live with it.

I might try 2 reservoirs - just for fun!!

I had the same thing happen a few times. Mainly at the autosolo at the charity day at combe. The steering would lose power around the cones here and there.
Also on track at combe i noticed the fluid would leak out the little black thing next to the radiator after a hard stint but it would not lose power.
