Like most petrolheads, I have had a load of cars over the years. Some have been sold due to upgrading, some due to breaking beyond financial repair, some I just got bored of. How do you stay focused on one car? I find myself trawling the classifieds whenever I get slightly bored of a car and start thinking "oooh what if". I need to get my car turbo'd and painted which will hopefully renew some enthusiasm for it

I drive it every day, maybe that's the problem. It's not much of an occasion.
I've been itching to get all my turbo parts fitted (so very, very close), plus me and a mate have been meaning to paint it for ages now but there always seems to be something in the way, be it time or money. Usually both haha

Agree - drive it - I think with a 5 you've got to do some sport/competitive driving to really appreciate how good they are! Do an autosolo - that will make you enjoy the car, its cheap and you dont need any special gear. I know everyone loves going FI but for me once you do this you kind of lose the fiveness of the MX5 - thats not to say it wont be fast and fun but it wont be a 5 any more and i think you will be then thinking about other faster more powerful cars which will use that power better.
Oh and i meant to say - like you i am always online looking and thinking "one of those" or "this is a bargain" and "that would be nice" - but my wife keeps me in check!!

I'm planning to do as many track days as possible this year but not sure I'd be confident enough to compete.
Main reason I'm going FI is because nearly all of the cars I've owned have been turbo'd, S14s, MR2 Turbos, GT4s etc and I just felt that the MX5 would benefit from a little kick up the rear canoe. I was getting destroyed by everything on track the other week haha

Turbos just make you fast in a straight line...

True, but I'm too far in to not turbo it now haha.

If you want to beat people on track dont bother with power spend all your money on tuition and practice - thats how you get quicker. I sat in a completely standard (but race prepared) 1.6 mx5 with a professional driver - he even overtook all the FI mx5s, plus just about everything else!!

But then again, imagine how fast he would have gone with an FI MX5! It's kinda deviated though, I'm not debating whether or not to turbo my car as it's happening one way or another. I'm just being impatient with it and need to do something to renew my enthusiasm for it. A tax rebate should help but as usual the revenue are taking their sweet time and are in no rush to pay me what I'm owed.

As I read on someone's signature on ClubRoadster forum (IIRC) - drive until you're faster than the car, then upgrade it.

I get a bit distracted by other cars and often fancy doing things to my car just for the sake of spending money on it. But ultimately just drive it. Nice spring weather like we're currently seeing, just fold that roof down and go for a blast. And hurry up and get that turbo fitted!!

Lots of money helps (I imagine!) Up to a point I guess. On the other hand, necessity is the mother of invention, and not being able to just throw money at a problem does help you focus down on achievable solutions. A lottery win would open up so many possibilities I'd just be frozen in indecision.

As I read on someone's signature on ClubRoadster forum (IIRC) - drive until you're faster than the car, then upgrade it. I mean, I get it but I always upgrade my cars like a lot of us do. I buy them to mess with and hopefully be fast at the same time. It's not one or the other for me. I use the internet. Post about what your doing, follow other builds. Order more wheels. I'm doing that, or at least trying haha. Wheels sadly are limited by the wallet. Lots of money helps (I imagine!) Agreed! But if I had lots of money, I probably wouldn't have an MX5 haha I get a bit distracted by other cars and often fancy doing things to my car just for the sake of spending money on it. But ultimately just drive it. Nice spring weather like we're currently seeing, just fold that roof down and go for a blast. And hurry up and get that turbo fitted!! I have a perma-hardtop haha but yes, the turbo needs to happen! ECU will be on it's way shortly but then mapping is more money. Never ending! Lots of money helps (I imagine!) Up to a point I guess.
