Modern "Grand Seiko".. If you have 6 grand to spend on a watch... this also discusses how Japanese cars beat everyone else. I kinda like japanese watches (well, everything japanese) so this is of interest. I do like mechanical Seikos, though I'm a cheapskate so no six grand stuff for me. Fifteen quid is more my level. I bought several on eBay over a couple of years, mostly 1970s-1980s Seiko 5's and often as "spares or repair", to teach myself the basics of servicing. Most of their movements' service manuals are online and parts are mostly still available. I only dipped a toe into the posher movements twice; one was a Hi-Beat (8 ticks per second rather than the usual 6) ladies watch for my daughter (that's eyestrain right there - all the complexity of a man's watch but every part only two thirds the size). Quite old so parts not available and it's a Frankenstein made from bits of two non-runners. The other is a 1975 Seiko Lord Matic for me, which would have been way out of my skinflint price range if it hadn't been wreckage. Tidied up okay and I'm wearing it now. Son wears another Frankenstein Seiko 5.

They are all the same inside once you strip the ancillaries away, crankshafts, camshaft, valves, unless it’s a rotary of course....

This is so true. And it's worth noting how many of the complaints in that article are about poor integration of smartphones with dashboard displays and entertainment systems. Until very recently I've been using a Windows Phone (yes, there are still a few out there) and while not perfect, it was pretty slickly integrated with a couple of aftermarket car radios. When I got into the car, if I'd previously been listening to a podcast or whatever, it would resume. And if I got a text message, it would interrupt to ask if I wanted to hear it. Trying to get a Galaxy S8 to do that job now. I fully expected it to be far, far slicker than the old Microsoft offering, but I've been swiftly disabused of any such naïve notion.

Got a good stereo with "Android" integration. It's bad. Bluetooth music is far better done. With that integration I have to reset the stereo to make it ever connect more than once. Turns out to be faster to just reset the battery. App integration is a bit of a nightmare on Android. I suspect the iphone stuff is slicker. Always heard good things about windows phones.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-43751276Tales from the future-is-now: 'Chinese police have used facial recognition technology to locate and arrest a man who was among a crowd of 60,000 concert goers. The suspect, who has been identified only as Mr Ao, was attending a concert by pop star Jacky Cheung in Nanchang city last weekend when he was caught. Police said the 31-year-old, who was wanted for "economic crimes", was "shocked" when he was caught. China has a huge surveillance network of over 170 million CCTV cameras. Mr Ao was identified by cameras at the concert's ticket entrance, and apprehended by police after he had sat down with other concert goers. "The suspect looked completely caught by surprise when we took him away," police officer Li Jin told state news agency Xinhua.'
