The Sleeve valve engine intrigued me because I had never heard of it before, i can sort of see why it never caught on:-

I think they started as marine engines but the railways liked them because they packed Canoeloads of power into a small enough package. I was told they had some trouble with cracking cylinders where the engine could draw in lubricating oil and use that as fuel, in which case it would race away unstoppably until it seized. I still see Deltic engines around sometimes, pulling freight.

They provided fairly amazing performance at a time when britain needed it (torpedo boats.. to sink the german subs, etc) - but they're way over-complex.

OK - this is a bit different. Some of you probably weren't expecting health stuff on this thread but.. here it is. I find health interesting. Because you know, I'm living. Effectively, research indicates.. most vegetable oils are bullprarrie canoe for your health. That includes sunflower and corn oils. roguehealthandfitness.com/vegetable-oils-are-dangerous-to-health/Executive summary .... the takeaway if you can't be bothered to read ^^ "If you need oil for salads or other foods, use olive oil, a healthy fat that has been used for thousands of years. However, for cooking at higher heat, use lard, tallow, butter, ghee, or coconut oil. Make sure these are pure and not hydrogenated." (my own response.. Sadly I really like stirfrying in peanut oil, but I tend to use olive oil for most things, and I mix it with butter for frying steaks )

Bringing interesting engines and health together... Spent a week at St Thomas' Hospital, Waterloo, when my daughter was born so spent a lot of time being a nosey parker, and came across these guys doing an engine swap for what I can only assume is an emergency back up generator for the whole of London

P.s. Coconut oil was a revelation when we started using it recently. So good. Olive oil or butter ftw though.

The anti animal fat offensive was started in the 60s almost entirely based on bad biased science from one american academic who had a vested interest in the processed foods and sugar business. at the same time a guy in the UK had researched how it was in fact processed sugar and complex carbohydrates that was the biggest health risk - he was largely ignored. I think the americans are now paying the price for this with their "mahoosive" obesity problem. We are not far behind but I believe we are turning a corner - my kids are much more clued up - though they like junk food they understand the risk of too much. Balanced diet no too much of anything, do not eat a whole big bar of Asda fruit and nut chocolate like I did yesterday!!!!! Ive got to get some lard in - makes the best chips!!!!

As I am on the subject of bad science (my favourite) This is probably one of the biggest conspiracies of misinformation and undeclared agendas in human history - literally billions have people have died due to this. Many so called environmentalists in the 70s were prepared to let thousands of people die in the developing world just to prove a point. www.thenewamerican.com/tech/environment/item/15583-ddt-breeds-deathRich nations and a few of the bigger aid charities threatened to remove all help to countries where spraying continued so in the end the poor sods were bullied into living with Malaria (note of course that malaria has been wiped out by these same rich nations who had a problem - namely the USA)
