Bringing interesting engines and health together... Spent a week at St Thomas' Hospital, Waterloo, when my daughter was born so spent a lot of time being a nosey parker, and came across these guys doing an engine swap for what I can only assume is an emergency back up generator for the whole of London A CHP (Combined heat and power) plant? There's one of those at Imperial College where i used to work. Two engines that big that run on natural gas. Powers the whole uni and heats a whole load of buildings too

Another Gem. Looking at the numbers on electric cars vs a bog standard turbodiesel of the last 15 years. wimminz.wordpress.com/2017/07/14/im-so-pretty/Basically, don't buy any foreseeable electric cars unless you're loaded, you live in a small city you never intend to leave it with said electric car - Our power supplies just aren't up to it. Contrast with the MPG you get with modern a diesel at 60MPH is so good there isn't such a big saving with electric motors, oh and the diesel takes 5 minutes to fill the tank, and probably cost under a grand to buy. ( BTW, that link is borderline NSFW - the writer is highly sexist, but that doesn't make his sense any less sensible. ) All true but he's an angry man!!!

The guy is not correct and inconsistent in his argument. He misses out some key flaws in his own argument as well. Also I suspect hes a dickhead.

It's a reasonably fair point he makes but some people have bought in to the whole free energy thing ( obviously won't last )The missus can charge for free at work, so it does work out quite cheap to run Well apart from the cost of buying one of these expensive vehicles, but no matter how its fuelled new vehicles cost what they cost. Teslas don’t depreciate that badly though so we don’t worry about that too much and she rarely does much distance. Doing big mileage, you can't beat buying a diesel beater and just running it into the ground as he suggests.

Now this is a funny one..
If you ever saw the inside of concord you'd also have seen how tiny those windows are - windows on modern "bus" econojets are mahoosive by comparison. And yes, erm, round corners reduce fracture stress bigly.

This is interesting. A cooling test between performance brake discs vs standard. Seems that for real world driving the performance pads actually run hotter than the stock ones, but at very high temperatures (IE on track), they would perform better

Coming home from work this evening with a work colleague and we got pulled by the motorway police in a Volvo s80 on a 54 plate (2004/5) Could this be a new approach from them using older cars to catch naughty people on the motorways ?

I used to have a Volvo S80 on a personalised plate, it also has blue sidelights. That car was the best 200 pounds I ever spent, everyone got out of your way as you accelerated from 70 to naughty speeds.

Gas modeled with magnets. Funky stuff. Amusing to see the compression bit. Magnetic fields are.. very interesting.

Sustainable zoom-zoom 2030! Mazda's engine breakthrough. Apparently it's atkinson cycle too A lot of speculation ... not alot of facts, sadly, yet.
