Oh and.. imagine if someone did repeated standardized engine oil tests to see which gave the best wear results... standard test, so only variable was the oil used.

Some polish guy did it :-) serious labour of love/OCD here. I'm blown away a little, heh.

These are some of the results he's got with different oils...

ordered - best at the top - numbers are 100ths of a millimetre in wear for a 5 minute friction test.

which is interesting because he tests the additive with an oil that scored really, really badly - shows just how effective some additive might be :-)

At Perkins they started running the engines up on air to bench test them, never saw one myself although was there when someone forgot to tighten up the end caps on a set of connecting rods, the tester was lucky to be alive when the cap came through the crankcase

My Grandfather was at Cambrai. I always thought that, as an infantryman scrambling about alongside the tanks, that he had the rough end of the stick. Having seen the reality of being inside, I'm not so sure....either way, it was totally canoe.
