Do people actually click on the plethora of adverts that photobucket and the like submerge one's browser in??
I think I have probably intentionally clicked one, maybe two at most, in the past year...

Like some others, i ditched photobucket a while ago for flickr, which I've had zero issues with This absolutely sucks the big one, how they can fathom charging that much when there are so many better free options out there already I cannot understand!

Well, they get rid of almost all their non-paying users, so they benefit by reducing their bandwidth drastically by not serving millions of photos for free. They gain $400 per year from the small proportion who stay. They lose a load of clicks on their website adverts.
But the ads only get seen by users uploading or fetching links. The bigger crowds who see the photos embedded elsewhere don't see that tsunami of popups. That's why I wonder if they have a cunning plan to bring back free 3rd party hosting but with small adverts added onto the photos. Of course that would break the advertising terms and conditions of lots of other sites so the prarrie canoestorm would probably only get worse for them.

Some people have really old software. The adverts bypass all pop up blockers that are out of date or old phones that have none. You genuinely cant get back to the site after the popups start unless uou restart the system. Its crazy.

I was looking for The Register's reaction yesterday. I knew it was the sort of story they couldn't resist. Maybe took a little longer than I expected for the news to spread.
LOL at "We have noticed you have been using Photobucket for 3rd party sharing". Really? At what point in the last 14 years did Photobucket forget that's exactly what Photobucket is for? What other purpose does it serve?
PS I see their Wikipedia entry has been edited now. Just one terse sentence added at the end of the first paragraph, but at least it stops the page looking entirely like a transcribed press release from Photobucket themselves.

I did this also some time ago. It's indicative of the current trend where all sorts of companies are trying to squeeze every last drop of blood out of us!!! Greedy bastards They are not owned by Rupert Murdoch are they!!??

I use a web hosting package to host my images, but I had the domain and hosting package anyway, so it made sense to do this rather than have an account somewhere else.
If you have a website, you can host your images on the same domain pretty easily. Even if you don't, hosting packages are a couple of quid a month. If anyone is interested I can post up a how-to.
It's probably worth considering this rather than moving to another commercial company which could eventually go the same way as photobucket

Well I guess somebody may have lawyered up good and proper because PB have pedalled back just a bit on their new terms & conditions. If you had any kind of paid 'Plus' account (which I think includes just ad-free but haven't checked) then you can carry on as before until the end of next year.
This raises a few points, the first of which is that they think they'll still be in business in 18 months. The next is why only the paid accounts? And then I wonder if they got taken by surprize and actually didn't expect their paying customers to walk rather than cough up for their most expensive package. I can't help imagining them scratching their heads and wondering what it was about their surprise withdrawal of service and $400 ransom demand that had annoyed their long-term paying customers so much.
