So I love the mk1 interior. Other than one thing. That cigarette lighter position annoys the prarrie canoe out of me on the aizawa car... it is in the perfect location to knobble my knee. The combination of aftermarket sports seats and a rollbar that has legs behind the seats :-) So I'm soliciting options to deal with it. My own current idea is this : put an aftermarket lighter socket in the cubby hole or under the stereo. Then take a saw to the thing that offends my knee, and replace it with something less angular. yet suitably inoffensive to the eye. Your ideas ? suggestions ? here to take the power feed from ? fusing suggestions ? etc.

Take the power feed from the current lighter socket. I spliced into the one on my mk2 to install a CB radio. It's already fused, or you could go from the switched live on the radio I suppose.

Right, I'll get some nice automotive power wiring to splice into the existing socket's wiring. Might also try a feed for lighting too as the new socket I have has a lighting bit.
I've thought about this a bit more and I recon I could put some nice black ABS plastic in when I remove the existing knee-knobbling bit of the dash there, with some decent PVD self-tappers. Might need a heat gun to get plastic in the right shape.
How I'll remove it ? well... well... grinder is looking like a nice idea.

Got everything but the ABS plastic. Looking forward to getting this done.

My cig lighter is now a little torch. Never hit my knee on it, but I have standard seats.

Feed for lighting you can splice from the stereo - then you should be able to hook into the illumination circuit so it only comes on with your lights. Should be pretty smart! I would chuck an inline fuse in as well, just to be safe.

I've always planned on fitting a S2000 starter button in mine, just for lols. But I am also 5'7 and have absolutely 0 problems fitting in any MX5 and even have to have the seat relatively far forwards (although leaned back for that authentic snoop dogg look)

This is only an issue for me because I have sports seats (as in, after-market, not-a-bucket, seats) - these www.nengun.com/recaro/sr-7-seriesand a cusco/safety devices rollbar with legs that go down behind said seats. I'm up front and my knees touching the dash

It's done! The hole is mighty. Feels good man. I've ordered some ABS plastic sheet which I'll heatgun into a nice shape and double-sided tape over the hole and surrounding area. Should even look OK.

Drove this car hard today all over the weald and north downs. The relocation of the lighter to below the head unit is a major improvement. Comfort just doubled especially on hard braking.
