My mk1 1.8 Eunos has developed a slight missfire, tbh its probably been there for sometime.
If I leave the car for a few days, especially if its damp, when the key is turned on (not start) there is a noise thats hard to describe (wump?) and the engine will run on three for a couple of seconds before clearing and going back on all four. This isn't the problem as such, although it's probably linked to the other issue.
The engine also has a slight missfire under load and sometimes on light throttle settings. I can't really feel it but since fitting the new exhaust I can definitely hear it.
I recently fitted new plugs and leads which made no difference and a diagnostic check only came up with charcoal filter fault (I removed this when I first got the car)
After my starting issue (caused by a poor connection) I'm wondering if its not down to dirty connectors but would this cause a fault to be recorded on the ECU.
Where to start looking

Are the new leads the thick ones (8mm)?

yes, Jackson racing so should be ok
Fitted a new fuel filter awhile back so fuel shouldn't be an issue

Misfire under load is typically a loss of HT voltage due to leakage so replacing the leads and plugs was the right first step. You could also give the coil terminals a good clean. A rag and WD40 are good for cleaning any carbon dust off the terminal posts that might be leaking current away and check the condition of the terminals inside the coils for corrosion or signs of overheating. You could also re-gap the plugs (from typically 1mm or 1.1mm) down to about 0.8mm as that will make it easier for them to spark at a lower voltage.
If that stuff doesn't help then it might suggest some kind of timing signal loss that means it doesn't try to spark, rather than trying and failing. That's the kind of fault more likely to cause a fault code.

Where are you melx5? Want to try my coil to see if it's that?

try reinstalling all the leads, just moving the contact can clean it :-)
.8mm gap should only be needed if you're boosting high - 1/1.1 ought to be fine.. I'm running those on my boosted car
might be dampness around the plugs.. WD40! :-)

Have you tried a known good coil pack?

I'm not boosted, the missfire was there before I fitted the new leads but I will remove them and clean the contacts just in case (inc connector block pins)
I'm in lincs so a bit of a drive to swap the packs over, thanks for the offer.
Will try cleaning contacts one at a time and see if I can narrow it down to one particular connector causing problems, maybe of use in the future
Fingers crossed it's not a coilpack

This might sound silly but check all the earths, clean them up inc the ppf one and the one on the battery in the boot There is a big one rear passenger side of engine and little ones near the front under the inlet manifold I have had misfire and hesitation caused by bad earths

Where are you melx5? Want to try my coil to see if it's that? The coil pack sorted the misfire and there seems to be more torque all through the range, thanks. This sounds odd but I figured the pack had sorted it as soon as I turned the key, the old pack would discharge instantly and the engine would almost fire before the starter engaged, with the replacement pack it takes a couple of revolutions before the motor starts, guess the wump sound I had when it rained was the coil breaking down, thing is I seem to remember it always being like this so may have had a duff pack for the past few years if not since owning the car. mymothercarsa2cv I owe you some beer tokens.
