So I've got @moca2cv's T2 4.1 FD to go in my '89 1.6 blue tahbo 'mbeki car. UPGRAYED! Didn't manage to get the half shafts (hub-side) stubs because we were bending everything we tried to use to stop the hub turning trying to get the castle nuts off. Diff already came out and has the eared 4-lug axle stubs coming out of each side.. ( I have the main shaft, which I'll definitely need. One less thing to worry about ) So my question is, if I use my own hub-side shafts from the VLSD, will they be the right length to attach to the stubby ear bits sticking out of my new diff ? Do the main axles with 4-lug ears on both the VLSD'd cars and Torsen'd cars match in length, or do I really need the ones from @moca2cv's car ? ( BTW, general suggestion - never try and remove castle nuts from an axle shaft unless you retain your handbrake. Don't strip the brakes before losening that nut LOL.)

Half shalfts are all the same length, it’s only the prope lengths that vary. Therefore should be fine.

Don't wanna be that guy but I was told the flanges on the 1.6 shafts and early 1.8 shafts aren't compatible. Never confirmed that though.

Better to be that guy than not. I will conduct some measurements, and get a mate who has a 1.6 vlsd to measure too.

so, measured the things.
4x80mm bolt pattern.
approximately 28cm from face to face of the stub hubs hard to measure exactly because the diff body is in the way.
What's the setup with the VLSD ? I'll try and measure mine, but if anyone else has a 1.6 vlsd laying about LMK the measurements.

I too am wondering this. I have a VLSD and 2 peice shafts, I am upgrading to a mk2 type 2 torsen and the single peice shaft splines seem different (in length mostly) ..
I'm rather confused as I was told that all half shafts are the same but it may seem Not? Anyone experienced this before?

My research indicates it's *definitely* different. See the top photo from this site: www.solomiata.com/Drivetrain.htmlTop one is a 1.6, Buttom one is 1.8. Noticeably wider spacing between the faces of the 1.6.. :-) The 1.6 VLSD and Open Diffs are 6" cored and so a smaller size, meaning the half shafts are longer than the ones for the 7" Torsens (1 & 2) from the 1.8. I've had some 1.8 single piece jobs from Suffolk Mazda delivered.

A good point well executed. Looks like i'm going to need to get a new half-shaft (The seller only gave me one single piece shaft as he damaged the other upon removal.)
Thanks for the info Atlex.

On my old car when I swapped 1.6 VLSD out for Torsen Type 1 with bolt on shafts I had to use propshaft and driveshafts from the 1.8, noticeable difference in length when next to each other on the floor.

Easiest thing to do is just swap everything out and put in the stuff from the 1.8. Youll also need new nuts for the upright end of the driveshaft as 1.8 use a different sized thread.

I'm going to need some nuts & bolts for that job. What size is it ? Will aim to get some nice nylocks.
