Managed to pick one of these up for cheap, looked for reviews but can't find a clear view. Will fit when I get a chance but keen to see what everyone else's experience is?

I picked up a Mk3 6spd Cobalt short shifter from Moss at the OC National Rally a few years ago. Quality is fairly good, although the finish wasn't entirely free of machining marks, and you could knock off a few edges with a fine-cut file. It did need lubricating with some multi-purpose grease when I fitted it. After a few weeks I noticed it was rattling quite a bit. I took it off and stretched the reverse lockout spring and that cured it. Not had any rattling in the last 18 months. Not that you'll get this problem with a MK1/2 box, as far as I can recall, my mates Mk2 I drove wasn't push-down reverse. I had another look at it a few months ago when I had the centre console off, and did notice the bit of plastic that does the reverse lockout was quite worn, but again, I don't think that'll be an issue with the MK1/2. The only thing to consider is when you've got the turret off, put a Beatrush shift collar on, instead of the standard delrin (plastic) one. They are quite expensive though (Β£35). If you or anyone you know is a half decent machinist, you could make one fairly easily I recon.

Honestly don't think the mx5 needs a short shifter.. other cars often benefit, but the mx5's shifting is already *so* well setup. I've had poor luck with the metal collars - it just wouldn't go in and I know of one shift turret messed up by them elsewhere.. Best thing I can suggest is the jass upper and doctormx5 lower setup, along with new replacement nylon bushings. for both the ball "shank"? and the collar. This I've done on both my cars and the results are lovely. The jass upper tightens up the tension on the shifter better than the original and dampens vibrations, because it has a lot of material. Also it has a load of foam to keep the heat from the exhaust down. www.jassperformance.com/shop/shift-bootThe doctormx5 lower is a silicon boot (not rubber!) and replacement for the upper turret spacer/flange. The rubber standard ones just don't last that well - the silicon item is a better seal. shop.doctormx5.co.uk/new-mazda-mx-5-89-05-lower-gear-shift-boot-gator-gaiter-mx5-8234-p.asp

Ok thanks guys, already got new rubbers and plastics on the shifter that's fitted. Might try the short shift and see how we get on, if it's mine I'll see about the items suggested above π

I had the Cobalt one on mine for a bit, didn't like it at all, so stuck a Jass extender on to bring it back to normal. The 2nd to 3rd shift was very sketchy, ruined the fluidity. Standard setup with new boots is hard to improve on. Ymmv.

Whatever you do donβt get an eBay shifter... π± I quite liked the feel of the short shifter, extension, copper bush and new boots (and fresh turret oil of course!). Felt very race car. However the quality of the eBay item let me down in the end, it fell apart!
