So I’m reading up on different forums about the legalities around the front number plate.
I’d like to switch to a 9” x 3” plate for the front and mount it on the JDM offset bracket.
According to google imports can have characters 64mm tall and 11mm wide, so a 9” x 3” plate would be ok to use legally.
I know a few here run these small plates with no issues with MOT or the plod.
Others say you’re better off with no front plate at all, apparently no front plate is less noticeable than an illegal front plate.
So what’s the law? Can I run a 9” x 3” plate and pass MOT and be alright with the plod?

As long as the plate fits the rules you’ll be fine. Small offset front places look cool on MX5s.

Yes
Even better if you have only 2 numbers in the registration

As long as you’ve taken in to account the minimum spacing around the letters and between them then yup you’re golden.
Most people fall foul on positioning of the plate rather than size. A plate reader is pretty sophisticated these days so size is less important than placement.

IIRC it's 11mm border minimum on a 'standard' sized font plate and 13mm on 'Import' sized font, so as long as it's spaced and bordered correctly (and 'as close to vertical as possible') you should be fine, as moca2cv says FWIW I ran no plate for about a month and had no hassle, but I tend to not frequent towns, or routes with lots of plod! I did once drive past 5 in half a mile, though but no pull! (I was surprised! lol) Currently have a minimum-border, import font, offset, stick-on plate below the mid-line of the bumper - likely pushing 'legal' as I'm not sure it's visible as proscribed in the regulations and it's not vertical lol: www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plateswww.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/part/II/made

To be honest I don't think the average copper cares about your plate unless it's really taking the mickey in terms of fonts and spacing. I think it's more that if they stop you for something else and you piss them off with a bad attitude it's another stick they can hit you with. I have a stick on plate on mine and I've never had any trouble.

It used to be that an illegally spaced plate was a worse offence than no plate, but I’m fairly sure it’s the same offence now. £1000 maximum fine if I remember correctly; were they thinking of adding points? My memory fails me...

I think it is still the case that it is worse to misrepresent a plate than have no plate at all!
It will be on the gov.uk website or in the Construction and Use regs somewhere, I'm sure.

Well, mine "fell" off and the very next day I got tugged for it. They sent me away to get it fixed and inspected by a garage with a stamp and then post this off to them. After that I installed a side mounted plate as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle... YMMV.
