Shouldn't you be sorting your MX5 out rather than spending money on a new car?
PIPE DOWN IN THE BACK.
A few years ago a mate from a cycling forum offered to lend me his car, I only owned an MX5 at the time and I needed to take my gf (now wife and mother of my child), her sister, and her sister's boyfriend on a "family" trip to Devon.
He told me a little bit about it and I was very interested, especially since my only other offer was a comp spec R32 4 door with no interior, CS2 suspension, and a steering rack that undid itself.
In we jumped and my first thoughts were, canoe, this is a bit of a heap. Faded red paintwork, natty interior that was very dirty, torn gear gaiter and very shiny steering wheel. Then I started it up and I thought, hmm this sounds fruity. Since it was not my car, I took it very easy, didn't speed, didn't drive hard, despite the temptation being there, also I think we were still in that period of our relationship that I was trying to convince my gf that I was not a maniac behind the wheel - she has since learned that is not true - which in hindsight is quite funny because I had a supercharged MK1 at the time and it was definitely the rawest, fastest car that she'd ever been in.
Finally, around the point we hit the A303, I thought, I can turn the taps a little bit, and everyone went a little quiet in the car. THIS IS FAST. I'm not sure if it's the big boost or what but it feels faster than my dad's 996 C2. I'd barely pressed the throttle and it had just launched forwards. I waited, let everyone calm down and forget about that, then tried again. This time I waited until I needed to pull out into the outside lane and I dropped a gear, full throttle this time, the factory turbo gauge went off the clock and the steering wheel fought tooth and nail to escape from my hands, but I eased my grip and let it wander, didn't fight it, and we went from under the speed limit to well into "go to jail" speeds in no time at all. My gf was making some noises and gripping the seat and I was involuntarily laughing. This thing was an absolute riot.
When I returned the car, I said to my friend, when it comes time to sell, let me know. I want that car.
After that time I borrowed it, it had a small detail done by a friend of mine that brought the paintwork back a treat, and then a lot more mechanical work and restoration done to it over time.
I then borrowed it again a couple of years ago, this time we went to the South of France, and I proposed to my wife on that trip. I raced a Maserati Gran Turismo and shamed him, sadly France doesn't have many fancy cars to race against so that was the only scalp. The car was a treat, I scared a hitchiker we picked up, who was very grateful for the lift, we went up some small mountain roads and we had a total blast.
The night I proposed there was a classic car rally taking place just right next to the town we were staying in. We'd had this amazing meal, my other half said yes, and then when we drove back to where we were staying, I chased 2 competition spec 911 rally cars and some french hot hatch competition cars on their way back from scrutineering, in the pitch black on beautiful French roads. I could have overtaken them at any time, they weren't flat out, but we had the windows down, the weather was good, the noises were amazing, I had just got engaged and it was one of the best drives of my life.
The car did have some issues on that trip that involved us being stuck on the side of the road with a car that wouldn't start, but honestly they weren't that bad, the weather was gorgeous so we were stopped in blazing heat and once I worked out it was the A/C causing the issue we didn't have a further problem.
After I handed it back to my friend I re-iterated what I said the first time, but this time I meant it even more, I had just had a major life experience in that car, and as many trips as I've been on, that was one of my favourite in a fantastic car.
After that it again received some exterior love, but also some interior love, being with a detailer for a week and having a ceramic coating applied after it was made to look like new. Even more mechanical work was done at great expense, always using OEM parts from the dealer. This car is like new.
When it came time for him to sell, the time and money put into it, making it one of the best examples of this car in the country, meant I just couldn't afford it. I gazed with sad eyes every time he re-listed it for sale. Sadly he was messed about by many a potential buyer, offering silly prices or quibbling over minor things that shouldn't really be an issue, so in the end he contacted me directly and made me an offer! Who'd have thought a seller would make a buyer an offer? He offered it to me at a price he knew I could afford on the condition that I take care of it and keep it in the condition it is now in. I had no problem with that, although my current parking situation has me in cold sweats considering the MX5 got driven into twice in the last month! This car is parked in a better space thankfully and actually this needs it more than the MX5 because I need to preserve it's value!!
So now you've read all that, you're gasping to know what the hell I've bought?

Aside from that, in the last 10 years, anything that’s gone wrong has been fixed with OEM Volvo parts including recently rear brake calipers being replaced at the dealer. It came with a few Volvo parts in boxes too, including the last 850 front wing to ever leave the Volvo factory. That’s right. I apparently own the last ever 850 front wing produced new.
