Did a hillclimb last weekend & with a combination of water wetter + with my fan wiring mod, no overheating from the turbo coolant feed 😁😁😁 so, is it time to pack dry-ice into the intercooler's fins then for real cooling..... Rich. Think I’m going to fit the Wilvern Motorsport bonnet vent kit that’s been sat on the shelf in my garage for a year. Puts me into road modified but I asked a scrute last weekend & I’m ok with the safety gear.

Been busy this afternoon with the angle grinder & sander. I fitted the rear 2 bonnet vents in. The reason being that the foremost sits right over the air filter & with the cold air feed from the fog light it should work pretty well. The rear is behind the turbo & should draw hot air out nicely. The new tyres have amazing grip too 😂

Very nice, always liked those bonnet vents, waiting for them to make them for the mk1.
Do they come with the blanking plates?

So, my Classic Marques campaign resumes this coming weekend with a double header at Blyton & checked the car over. Decided not to risk the cracked discs & changed them for some Brembo ones that were on offer at Eurcarparts.

Isn't non standard holes a no no for road classes sprinting? It’s fine for CM classes. If I had to I could go in roadgoing modified as I have harness, hans, rollbar etc. I checked with a scrute at my last event & he said it was fine. If the worst comes to the worst I can put some tape over the holes, plus have a spare uncut bonnet.

Some people say my MX5 rolls too much. My reply is if you were 4 seconds quicker, your car would roll a bit more too😂

Very true, I had a Mk2 road car that cornered amazingly flat ... everyone complemented how good it was, on a dead flat, even road ... how many roads are dead flat and even🤣
It was completely unsettled by the smallest imperfection in the road surface, and jumped sideways every time you go near a white line ... not ideal!

So after the speed championship season, the MX5 has had a bit of a well earned rest. Plus I needed a bit of time out myself. Got my mojo back after coming back from holiday & started to do a few jobs on the car. Getting the 5 off the line is a bit of a tricky one as it can bog down/wildly wheel spin or shake the transmission about. The 1st 2 are down to me but I can do something proactive about the trans vibration….. I don’t know what they’re called but I replaced the 2 diff cups that clamp the void fillers to the diff bushes as the originals were perished & a bit bent. East peasey. The next job was a bit of a bugger. I decided to change the IL Motorsport mounts for some from Skidnation ones & decided to start on the induction side. The Haynes manual says unbolt & replace….. well, yes but it’s a complete pain in the rear canoe if you have an oil cooler sandwich plate, coolant reroute pipe etc in the way. So, I ended going in through the wheel arch. After a lot of swearing it was done along with an oil change whilst I had the car up in the air. Went for a quick blast around the lanes last night & the engine/gearbox feels much more solidly mounted that’s for sure. There is a little low frequency resonance at idle but apart from that no down sides as far as I can tell. 🤞🏻

Had a bit of a health hiccup which has been a bit of a limiting factor doing stuff on the MX5, however, that has enabled me to catch up with a bit of reading….. So, since I last read about handling, there seems to have been a change of thought re ARBs.. Previously, I used to let the car roll to press the outer tyre into the tarmac at the expense of a loss of grip on the inner tyre. Turns out that thinking has now changed to evening out the grip across the axle as the grip lost on the inner is greater than the grip gained on the outer. With that in mind, I’m in the process of changing the std ARBs out for a set of whileline adjustable ones. Down to the knotty gritty: I started on the front end- what a pain in the rear canoe. The drop link nuts were rusted solid & ended up getting a little agricultural with the angle grinder, lump hammer + cold chisel. I managed to save the drop links though, just need to find some new nuts… M12?

This will be interesting and I for one agree with what you are saying here. Look forward to your usual in depth report, keep us all posted.

Hello Rich, Still not great I’m afraid. I won’t be going back to work until October at the earliest, which is a real bugger as I love my job. It’ll be really interesting to see how the ARBs affect things; at the moment I have a neutral/very slight oversteer bias. Hopefully, I won’t have mucked that up & just able to generate more grip🤞🏻 This season’s competition has already had a few cancellations for me as I’ve already missed 2x Gurstons & Aintree. cheers Howard

Managed to do the Bailey Sprint meeting yesterday at Goodwood. The ARBs made a huge time difference as I improved my personal best by a massive 3.02 seconds. Over 1 lap! So, my driving technique is to drive just on the verge of sliding & with the increase in grip, my time tumbled. One of the best ‘bangs for buck’ mods I’ve done.
