more progress (or lack of...) delivery today of a box (20 off) of on/off/on momentry switches, plan is to replace the E-window switches so hopefully the wiring will be IDIOT-PROOF also today a roadtrip to collect an ebay purchase of an Eunos numberplate panel as the one on my car is in a few bits, 40+ mile each way jaunt to LLandow, lovely evening to burn petrol the panel is scruffy as the paint is 'interesting' BUT its solid with all its locating lugs intact tomorow will be prep & painting then fitting...... interesting, I'd be checking the 'bores' before fitting the hubs first as I'm also fitting new bearings in the rears / inspecting & re-greasing the fornts if they look like it might be a good idea helps to have a 'spare' set from the orange 'G' reg '5 I stripped a few months ago although I believe the studs are HB although not bought from tweeks. if they seem loose I'll 'pin' them to stop possible issues with them turning? ALSO.... My mrs. has now decided that she wants a '5....... double trouble. Rich.

also. Suzuki Capuccino screenwash reservoir trial-fit photo... as to final fitment, it's now sorta moved a few inches towards the middle of the car, as reference for position, one mount I've used has a longer bolt in the existing Mazda bolthole (seen in the image with a yellow wire-crimp terminal bolted) that was used to secure the aircon pipe and a 'dog-leg metal bracket dropping vertically-down to pickup the tank's attachment hole. for the above I had to remove the Eunos vin-plate as the securing 'self-tapping' screws are sharp & I need to cut them to the minimum length to hold - tomorows job the wiring was extended by snipping the origonal plug-socket & solder/heatschrink joint a length of twincore (speaker wire?) then covering the length with heatschrink for protection and running up through the bulkhead using the origonal grommet that the screenwash pipe was fed through then accross the car. will sort a few photo's tomorow Rich.

okey, update time.. heres how I mounted the Suzuki Capuccino screenwash reservoir. as mentioned in the previous post, its more central than the previous photo. and the bracket that picks up with a captive-nut (would have been for an aircon pipe clamp) simple 'dogleg' in steel to fit. (other side is bolted direct to bulkhead. and, as a temporary-fit atmospheric breather catchcan (poundshop bicycle drinks bottle with a 'filter' fitted in lid / pipe fed through hole in side) been playing with making a replacement electric-window switch setup, bought some momentry on-off-on switches & am making the subloom to fit the car (6wires on 2 switches with 6 terminals each, how hard can it be? also, looking at bulbs to illuminate the heater controls, capless jobbies - must order some......... Rich.

today was spent removing the cobalt exhaust & silenced decat that the previous owner fitted, as with a lowered car the exhaust had some collision-damage & was leaking at the flange-joints... the car still has the origonal manifold & downpipe, the downpipe still had it's heatshield attached, admittedly this was starting to rattle as age had taken its toll on the tack-welds at both ends. time to get medeval with it & a screwdriver..... 10 mins & some swearing then no heatshield on the downpipe Also, todays jobs were aimed at repairing where the PO had fitted the cat overheat sensor (JDM Eunos only?) in the decat, the sensor had snapped & was leaking / blowing where it was self-tapping screwed into the decat case. Remedy was to pop-rivet a piece of steel over the holes & seal with the universal cure - SILICONE! (I have a tig set but argoshield & mild steel filler rods dont work well on the Stainless of the decat so bodge repair to the rescue ) as to exhaust sealing, I dispise conventional exhaust sealer paste or fireputty, it bakes solid & can be damaged with vibration & impact. from many years experience owning, building & repairing rallycars I've settled on using silicone sealer as an exhaust sealer for anything pipe related, on slip joints especially but works wonders on pipe flanges- not manifold to cylinderhead / turbo as they have their own gaskets or metal-metal surface sealing. Next, can I make the exhaust quieter? I find the exhaust a bit too loud, to the point that I'm considering a diferent system maybe even a standard Mazda item just to avoid what I find to be unnecessary noise I dont care for the 3" tailpipe as on the Cobalt exhaust, don't see any practical reason for it. also as it jumps from the 2 1/4" (the system diameter) to the tailpipes 3" diameter I think this adds to the volume & echo's..... So. anglegrinder & 1mm slitting-disc later the tailpipe has been removed and I'm going to sort a piece of 2 1/4" id pipe to extend past the rear bumper - tomorows job more to come... Rich.

Exhaust reassembled, new tailpipe on the Cobalt backbox & hopefully quieter definately more to my taste as I didn't likr the 'drainpipe'... anyway, underbonnet cleanup continues, the car doesnt have aircon anymore, I'm tempted to remove all 'spare' wires including the AC related but I'm partly considering leaving some as can be used for relay triggers (rad-fan manual override?) - definately have the PAS pressure-warning wire as redundant, from what I can see theres a load of 'extras' that are not needed (remove wieght maybe taking this a little TOO seriously ) Rich.

so. roadtest (& motorway)... the new tailpipe in the cobalt backbox has made an improvement, less boy-racer, more MAN-Racer the low-speed echo & drone is gone, gets louder oner 4K but most of the noise heard is now induction so as far as I'm concerned its mission accomplished Rich.

Still thinking of wheels, its on 15" x 6" OE Enkei 5-spokes now, I have a set of Compomotive 5-spoke (MO?) in 7" x 15" that were destined for the Eunos BUT they are somewhat heavy I have a few more wheels in my collection... from my last mk2 Escort rallycar I have ~20 or more of the Capri 'Laser' 6" x 13" / et 19 aluminium 4-spoke wheels (cheaper Ford-fit copies of the infamaous 'RS' 4-spoke as fitted to mk1 & mk2 Escorts) as well as a few (~10??) of the 'RS' 4-spoke wheels... and a few (~10?) 'Group4' fitment Alleycat 'Rally-Special' crossspoke wheels in 7" x 13" and maybe the same in 8" x 13", also a pair of Revolution 4-spoke wheels in 8" x 13" (et0) flavour... anyeay, I'm tempted to re-drill the Mazda hubs to the Ford (4x108) PCD so I can use the Laser wheels BUT I think thats going to be considered over the winter while I rebuild the suspension...... the Alleycat & Revolution's are sorta destined for use on my 1978 Vauxhall Chevette HS if I ever manage to find time to continue its 10 year + 'build' (otherwise known of as 10 years collecting bits then getting constantly sidetracked - damn ADD ) Although, 8" Revolutions would look good on the '5.... Rich.

more ramblings...... the car is coming off the road this week so last drive is Wensday on the plus side, winter-work will have some underbody tidying (replacing the flat 'frame-rails') and rear axle rebuild, maybe fhe front axle will get some attention? Rich.

as of tomorow the Eunos is off the road for the winter (till Febuary?) as the insurance expires & I'm putting my 1987 mk2 Golf (Tdi) back into service as winter hack winter joblist is variable, replace the flat underfloor 'frame-rails' (box-section steel & weld to the rescue) and a rear suspension rebuild with hopefully upgrading to a 7"diff etc. can I afford a proper 'plate' type lsd? thinking of one from 3J Driveline but I'm going to have to find the funds obviously some bearings and ready to assemble - then theres the question of final-drive ratio....... if the stars are aligned I will find a Kia Sportage (mk1) front diff to get the 4.7:1 ratio gears, the next best being a 1.6 NB diff (4.1:1?) BUT, must find a Kia diff first........ Rich.

Okey, update time, also direction change time all thats happened with the '5 is wet, another glorious Welsh December resembles the ocean (at least in my drive & gaden....) so, I've been looking for dry workspace again, something that is somewhat rare around here - for example, my garage, workshop & several sheds are somewhat full... so will see what happens in the new year anyway, I've just bought an Eaton M45 Supercharger from a Mercedes 'C' class (w203 type), supposedly from a low millage car so hopefully in good condition when it lands, I will assess the fitting & installation then look into making brackets & the pipework adaptors to get it mecanically fitted.... then save for suitable ECU & intercooler setup bits... Rich.

lastnight I removed the seats to try & dry them... theres puddles in the footwells & carpets F'Kin thing..... Ebay Mercedes M45 Supercharger has landed looks to be in tidy condition with light external corrosion / dusting of the alloy castings but internally clean with the impellers being unmarked. a basic bearing & gear backlash check seems good - `I doubt I'll bother with new bearings etc but maybe shedule an oil change for the future? now the fun of mount-bracket design & manufacture then the 'extra' costs of ecu etc. replacement will it run or drive again? *also* have decided to stick with the 1.6 that's in the car (untill it detonates?) with the 'spare' 1.8 being the emergancy replacement then maybe more fiddlin....... I'm intending to order some goodies from Supermiata in the USA so hopefully not hit with too much import duty (ok, so I accept that I will have a nice bill before I can claim goodies from parcelfarce but needmust etc.) Rich.

Found a Kia Sportage front diff, been looking for one since this time last year...... so, 4.777777777778:1 (or, 4.8:1) final drive so, need a post '93 or '94 7' diff to fit it into now then a six speed box..... (to ignore 1st & drive as a 'dogleg' 5 speed) ratio = mph @7200 rpm 1st 3.760 = 27.0 2nd 2.269 = 44.8 3rd 1.645 = 61.8 4th 1.257 = 80.8 5th 1.000 = 101.6 6th .843 = 120.5 Engine speed at 65 mph in top: 3882 rpm. suppose the clutch needs serious attention (wil I buy the Supermiata multiplate clutch plates?) more bloody money........ NEXT..... Rich.

congrats on the kia diff woop.
for clutch.. save up for the skuzzle kit - I'm on one and howardb66? is too - it's a great clutch, but it does require a 1.8 fly. and it feels totally oem.

I've decided on the multiplate clutch direction, NOT oem feel! Supermiata sell clutches & spare parts, after emailing I know that their discs are .250" (6mm) and the AP Racing multplate covers I've in my workshop are for a 7.1mm disc Luckily I have a lathe (well, 2 & a milling-machine) so can sort the diference OR do I use a Tran-x 5 speed (based on the Ford Sierra type 9) with a Quaife bellhousing (~£600+ ) and forget mix&match clutches Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....
