“do I need it? unsure, I have a 4.778:1 but lower ratio suits my build (& I'm not brave enough for high speeds ). ” You’re going to build something? I thought were a vintage parts collector 😜

Zed. so err, you selling the 4.778? ha, the f uckin sWeAr fIlTeR is easily avoided, shame its setup to detect words in commonly used language anyway, as to the 4.778, I might rehome it (as a semi-built diff with the pinion set in a pigshead with new bearings / seal but no diff unit, might also have a gear ratio pair coming but thats not finalised yet (or it's ratio - untill the diff is opened for inspection & toothcount) also depends on if I spend nearly £600 on a pair of gears ROFL, bit late....Rich.

anyway, a slightly cheaper sidetrack... back to the throttlebodies. started fitting the airbox, it is an old SBDevelopments item and supplied undrilled so vaguely universal - obviously fits a Vauxhall XE but they're similar size to the Mazda engine. the outside looks much nicer to fit the velocity-stacks I needed to cut oversize holes but luckily there are flanges so easily mounted & sealed. will bolt and use silicone to fix. the flanges have captive nuts fitted so a few short m5 bolts & washers to secure. will look something like this. starting to look like its togther (2 bolts Positioning) view down the throat. the cover held in place (to photograph) view down the intake. the intake 'hole' is 5" so large enough to swallow small mamals etc. a long intake tract, guessing the bonnet will need massaging slightly to clear also, my workshop needs tidying. tomorrow I'l put the head / tb's back on the cylinderblock in the car and assess the clearance (or lack of? Rich.

Will those printed trumpets take the weight?

Will those printed trumpets take the weight? not 3d printed, real cf ^^They were cheap I am looking at bracing, the throttlebodies have a threadded boss between the bores so that'll be a pair but thinking also of having something more verticle to the cylinderblock or enginemount area as support all depends if it'll fit underbonnet (or if the bonnet can be gently persuaded to give clearance - it is aluminium so anneal & planish ) Rich.

so...... thinking..... (dangerous) 5.38:1 cwp, whats the difference between that and a 4.778:1 back to a post I made a while ago... mighty5s.com/thread/3845/gearing-calculationsI'd previously worked-out standard Mazda diff / gearbox ratios using zealautowerks.com/transcalc.phpwith an 'average' 195/50/15 tyre size and 7,500rpm limit so had some ideas - including the 4.778:1 but curiosity got the better of me so, looks like 4,000rpm is... 60mph hummmmmmmmmm. Rich.

back to the tb's... when I ordered the manifold this optional coolant manifold was also selected, both were made to order and shipped seperately so this was delivered today (like I'm in a rush!) fits on the underside of the manifold, connects to the lower / waterpump inlet hose (as Vauxhalls standard design - not always used in car or builders preference) better view... the airbox mounted (look, no hands!) arbox sits the same distance as the rear of the cylinderhead, important to remember when fitting the engine / making mounts. tried to show the length compared to a cylinderhead - failed also, I've another diff to build shortly so ordered a pair of diff pinion bearings (32307 £10.59 & 32206 £5.61 each posted) on ebay yesterday evening.. delivered this morning Rich.

Vauxhall head back on the car / Mazda 1.6 block (same hight as XE's) to try the intake & airbox... will it fit? think it'll need a bit of work also hits the adjuster on the top of the damper so a minor issue.... changing to a different direction again as it started raining slightly.... started cleaning a diff case / pigshead, stripped the diff and gears out but left pinion bearings and oilseal in place to save any damage. attacked with a chipping-hammer then rotary wirebrush in a drill to remove the chunks then in a bucket with a gallon of 40% phosphoric acid and 1/2 gallon of water, obviously not quite enough. needs more? but I'm lazy so..... I'll leave this fester sit overnight then agitate & rub with a wire brush and soak some more, then rinse (maybe in the hot partswasher dishwasher) and paint ready for assembly. more to follow... Rich.

Rich, Check the Motorsport Assasins Regs there is something about keeping the side profile as per stock in roadgoing !! You might have to go into Crazy Car Class.

Rich, Check the Motorsport Assasins Regs there is something about keeping the side profile as per stock in roadgoing !! You might have to go into Crazy Car Class. I get the feeling that I've missed the boat by now BUT have the option of not running that airbox and using a standard bonnet line different championships have different sr's so that confuses matters also I am looking @ Safety Devices proper full cage so safety equipment will be taken care of but probably end up in road modified if I'm lucky www.safetydevices.com/motorsport/products/roll-cage/Mazda+MX5+Mk1+'28NA'29-1989-1998-2-door-without-sunroof/909/1399/ Rich.

For the airbox/plenum thing, looks like you either need to get a bent manifold so the trumpets point more horizontally, or can you stick a sausage filter over it instead of the bulbous air box? Or the nuclear option, cut a hole in the bonnet...
