1992 1.6 auto Hey...seeking advice on changing the ATF in my box - it's brown, smells fine and shifts ok....but I've no evidence of it ever being changed and it's meant to be red right?! I'm also too broke to pay someone to do it, am pretty reasonable with spanners, there are no specialists nearby, blah blah. My understanding is that the book way of doing it is to drop the sump off entirely, ruin the driveway due to lack of drain hole, pull the pipes to the cooler, refill through the dipstick hole and get some into the cooler by blowing through a straw or something.... I have a pela pump and hoses to fit down the dipstick hole. So....if I were to get it nice and warm and then suck it out and refill, possibly adding a can of magic gearbox cleaner.....ran it around for a month, repeated, and then did the same a 3rd time....skipping any magic cleaner on 2 and 3....this would essentially change my ATF without ruining a driveway, my back or anything else? Also, up until things got all newfangled and electronic, ATF is ATF right? I'm familiar with changing it in marine gearboxes (hence the pela pump). Comma/Miller/whoever will be fine? Thanks

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've done your research - or at least more than I have lol Whereabouts are you in this fine land of ours? Mark at PenarthMX5 (or whatever they're called) seems to be super-cheap in terms of hourly rates, plus I know he's done work on swapping autoboxes for manuals before, so he might well be familiar with their oil change procedures!

Should work. I did I by the book a few years ago, it's by far the messiest job I've done on an mx5! The pump method should work

Actually I emailed Mark about Saturday club because underseal and cavity wax - I did ask him but not had reply yet....busy with the sun I expect No one wants there car off the road in this weather! I'm between Gloucestershire and Herts at the moment but tiny car has been at local garage dealing with things whilst I was abroard - took them sodding forever to deal with all of the coolant disappearing one night in the M25, a perished hose and a knackered relay....someone then backed into my drivers door whilst there - they will sort it but going to take 2 days and grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....chipsaway would fix it in 2 hrs! Wish there were more places that rented lifts and kettles....

Pela pump is wicked good. Given it's ATF and ATF is cheap, you could spend twice on ATF and flush it. Wasteful but.. have you ever seen the inside of an AT box ? work of art.

Honestly Atlex, I just about get a manual box, an autobox is made entirely of magic and witchcraft as far as I am concerned. But a linky to cheap ATF would be much appreciated! Pela pumps - a word of warning....if it seems all Canoey and blocked, empty it, glove up and unscrew it - because the base will blow off at the most inopportune moment leaving you coated in all sorts of horror

Yup, do a Manual swap. You won't regret it! But if you don't .. the AT box takes 4L of ATF Fluid. Generally for a PELA-style not-a-full-flush replacement you're aiming to drain as much as you can and then replace what you drained. This might mean you pull 2L from the box via the filler hole... Then you top it up with new fluid, same amount as you removed. Run the car a mile or so to mix the fluids up then repeat the procedure. Assuming you do it 2L at a time.. First run you get 50% new fluid. After the second procedure this is increased to 75%. Third attempt would be 87.5% new. even 50% is still a great improvement when your gearbox may be on its original fluid (heh). Halfords should have some 5L tubs at a good price. (under £30) Also Otherwise, any Dexron 2 or 3 should be fine. Also ask about trade discounts or forum discounts.. Ebay can sometimes have cheaper i.e. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fully-Synthetic-ATF-Dexron-IIIH-Transmission-Fluid-5-Litres-Made-in-UK/111716509174You can get even cheaper 5L tubs of D3 non-fully-synthetic.

4l? That I can live with....I thought it was 8 and that gets expensive like changing the oil on the boat (3 gallons!) It seems I spend all of my money on fluids for mechanical things at the moment She can have fully synthetic, I'm not that mean!
