Hello all
In need of a bit of guidance here. I have a Berkeley that has just been turbo'd and the open diff that is in does not inspire confidence with 304nm of torque. I have a type 1 Torsen from a G ltd to go in, but now comes the bit I'm struggling with. The open diff has push in shafts but the Torsen has flanges coming from the diff. What do I need to do to fit the Torsen?
Do I bin the flange shafts and use the push in shafts from the open diff?
Do I bin the push in shafts and purchase a set of shafts to match the flanges?
Both diffs are from 1.8 cars.
Many thanks guys.

simplest (but not cheapest) thing is to get a set of complete later 1.8 single piece shafts, getting rid of the flanged ones. I've gone through this process twice... , the flanged ones a bit faffy. You can just pop the half shaft ones out of your nice new 4.1 T1. www.ebay.co.uk/str/suffolkmazda (info@suffolkmazda.co.uk ) sold me a set of said shafts. Don't forget to check the CVs for sufficient play. If they don't play nicely you might want to regrease them and/or put new boots on. check the boots for splits. The shafts don't have any flanges, they just haved splined shafts that stick into the diff or into the hub. You may want to check this thread where I was initially given wrong info - the photos is there to show the difference between 1.6 and 1.8 diffs and how the half-shaft setups are incompatible. www.mighty5s.com/thread/2397/torsen-eared-style-axles-lengths

Well the Berkeley is late '97 and has the one piece shafts. So am I correct in thinking that I just bin the stub shafts with the flanges and pop in the one piece shafts? Would save the hassle of trying to get them out of the hubs.

Would save the hassle of trying to get them out of the hubs. As long as the berkley is a 1.8 (I think all 97 cars were 1.8) you're in for a win. Those are the shafts you want anyway. You just need the appropriate main drift shaft that came with the torsen :-)

Far as I know it's only '89-'93 1.6 cars that have the different size shafts. All post-'93 cars whether 1.8 or 1.6 got the bigger diff and matching shafts.
So the easiest swap (since the biggest ballache by far is hammering the shafts out of the hubs) will be to pull out the flanged stubs and keep using the existing single piece shafts.

Yip. Thats what I did. Now selling said open diff with the stub shafts if required.
