So I've been lurking around here for a little while and decided that I should probably start a thread to track some progress.
History:
Previously, 8 years ago, I bought my first sports car... the Mx5, Dad and Gramps seem to of always had British classics and I felt I should join the group. The Dakar was purchased and I spent a fun summer driving round enjoying it before I headed off to university, second year came round and I wanted something to put the motorway miles on so the mx5 was tucked up in the parents garage and I picked up a Mitsubishi FTO to rack up the miles.
The FTO blew it's head gasket on the way home for xmas so that finally gave me the kick start to get the mx5 out of the garage and back on the road, my requirements for the car had also changed so cue a bit of an overhaul and a few upgrades, at least that's the plan!
First day of ownership:
First day out of the garage awaiting the trailer (circa 6 years after being stored):
Once it had arrived at it's new home it was time to see just how much work we had let ourselves in for... Lots was the answer!
Stuff to be done:
- Full service
- New tyres, I would like some new wheels as well
- De-rust and underseal again
- New bushes and powdercoat suspension components
- Sills to be repaired, usual rust spots... it has lived in Cornwall for 8+ years
- Steering rack pipes leaking
- Brakes overhaul
- Rear heat shield disintegrated in my hand
- Two springs were cracked so need replacing
- Potential damper upgrade
The tool of preference became the impact driver and soon all of the suspension components had been stripped off and we were left with a driveway full of parts
Starting to strip back the shell
Tried some electrolysis on a few bits
The disc was used as the rust collector and the process left this behind
At this point all work stopped as we went on holiday... I've since managed to slip a disc in my back so light duties only! Luckily my boyfriend has been awesome and the parts to be fitted collection has been growing steadily.
These arrived home along with the powder coated bits
Bushes yet to be pushed in.
Next up the brake overhaul has begun
And that's about it... hopefully the back improves and things can start going back onto the car after the shell is cleaned up and undersealed!
Plan once it's complete is to use it as the daily and also take it to some tracks.
