So having sold the Z4C, I’m on the look out for a daily. I’ve been using the 5 lately which has been fine but not something I’ll do full time as it’s not really set up for daily duties. So what to get, I’ve had a lot of cars recently this thread below covers most recent one’s, from 2013. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/185360/year-carsIdeally it’ll cost under £4K, be relatively small, hatchback most likely will be most suitable for my new job/role. Preferably something interesting too. So my list so far is: Fiat Panda 100hp Civic Type R EP3 Retro choice would be another MR2 mk1 Maybe a Renault Clio 182?, Corolla/Yaris T sport Anyone had any experience of the above? Well the first two, I’ve had 4 Mk1 MR2’s already Anyone have any other choices? I feel like I’ve kind run through everything that I want currently without spending 8-9k+ again and with future plans I’m not really interested in having that much in a car right now. Any thoughts, much appreciated. Aaron

A Sporty Corolla, or EG Civic, or CRX I think a daily should have some boot space, hence^

A few friends have owned/still own, EP3 Type Rs. Reliable, good handling for FWD, plus loads of modification options out there. I'd think you should be able to get one well under £4k, with a bit of change for mods. Just good luck in finding one that hasn't had the Barry Boys treatment!

Big dirty Saab barge. Sod the fuel economy and just enjoy burning off "lads" at the lights.
Cost: 1k and use the rest for the fuel the bastard drinks.

For 4k you could look at CLio 197/200 or an FN2 Type R. These are what I'll be looking at if I need to get a DD.
A 350Z/RX-8 would fall in budget but I don't know how much of daily driver they'd be, with the MPG and the 2 seats.

Meh, 197/200s are lardy - You could pick up a mint Cup 172 for that money and then keep it long term, they are pretty much at the bottom of their depreciation curve right now and no-gadgets cars can surely only go up in value! Panda 100hp is supposed to be a hoot but very firmly suspended, so state of the roads on your commute journey might rule that out if it's cross-country? You could just get a cheapy mk2 MX5 and run it till it dies? I think even the mk1s are fine for long distance commuting - I do 100 miles a day at least 3 days a week (roof down unless it's slashing it down ) and it seems fine - even running rough as a dog, it just keeps on going lol

Buy something slowish and boring. Civic "not type r" Tailgate McNoIndicate e36 325i
Something like that, even a volvo v70 2,5t would fit I suppose.
Fun daily just gets you another car that you will go "it would be better if".

Thanks for all the replies. Always fancied a CRX I must say, but finding a decent one for £4K is getting tricky to do. In terms of a 197/200 or FN2, i prefer the idea (and the cars themselves) of getting a better example of the 172/182 or EP3 for my budget. I couldn’t bring myself to want a mk2 was a local ITB’d one for great money recently but still couldn’t bring myself to want it enough haha Heard about the very firm ride of a Panda but there are a few ways to improve that apparently, so definitely remains the most “sensible” option. The more sensible options, I have thought of sensible rides, C30 D5, Auris SR180, Civic 2.2 CDTi amongst others but don’t quite feel ready for that. I may go and view an Auris or Civic diesel and see what they are like to drive, may change my mind, possibly. So for now the list to try out is; Panda 100HP, EP3 CTR, Facelift Corolla T Sport(If i can find a half decent one, basically half the price of a EP3), Clio 172/182, Auris SR180, Diesel Civic, C30 D5.

I drive a clio 55 plate to work. It's A-B is great, great on petrol . Cost me £700 4 years ago. Nothing has gone wrong yet at 122.000 miles on the clock. Love it.
