So you're sat at work with nothing to do of a lunchbreak and your car is outside, what are you going to do? Hopefully people will add to this and we can get a list together of 5 minute fixes, quick mods, odd jobs and stuff that will keep someone occupied whilst having their sandwiches.
Checks and maintenance
1. Clean the mk1 headlight lenses 2. Check oil level 3. Check carpets for damp patches 4. Refill the screenwash 5. Clean under the fuel door around the cap 6. Check tyre pressures 7. Poke through the sill drain holes 8. Check/adjust/tighten soft/hardtop catches and strikers.
Tidying and tweaks
1. Adjust the throttle cable slack 2. Adjust the level of the mk1 headlight overs so they are more flush with the bonnet/wings 3. Secure the back of a vent to stop it drooping 4. Remove charcoal cannister 5. Clean the drain holes
Mods
1. Fit Permacap fuel cap 2. Fit tyrevalve dustcaps 3. Upgrade wheel nuts 4. Fit LED bulbs 5. Wrap yellow insulation tape on your positive battery connection as per MSA regs
Any more for any more?

If you have an (early?) 1.6, strong pliers, the replacement part, some coolant to top-up with and small hands/wrists, you can probably change the Cursed Water Plug in a matter of minutes! Other than that... - clean your windows / mirrors / rear lights / side reflectors / front sidelights so they are spotlessly clean, helping you to see and be seen better - read a chapter of a Reg Local book, so you can practice the recommendations on the way home later - check your wheelnuts are tight - check your LSD is working correctly by laying down some 11s across the car park Maybe don't say that you're going to check if your nuts are tight and then going to check for any damp patches, though...

Right at the back of the engine, underneath the CAS, there's a blanked off water take-off pipe that (IIRC) was used on the 323 Turbo engine that the 1.6 is derived from. When I say blanked off, though, I mean they just stuck a tiny black rubber condom over it and pressure-clamped it in place... lol When the rubber fails (like mine did on the motoroway ) you lose all your coolant in about 1 minute, and topping it up doesn't work because it just gushes out the broken condom/plug thing! So you're stranded for the sake of a £5(ish) part that no recovery truck will have in their kit! I did take some pictures and put them on here somewhere, I'll have to find them... When I fixed mine I bought two replacement plugs - might as well leave one in the car, just in case! lol

Just updated with another, to poke through the sill drain holes.
Heard a bit of a slosh on braking last night, so this morning I stabbed the screwdriver through the sill holes and the OS sill had water in it.

Was going to post this today! Opened up Bambi's yesterday following sloshing being heard for ages, it's good to see water coming out and the hope the drains will now function

Happens to the best of us. Drill those drain holes. I suggest a 3mm drillbit. I need to get round to doing this. Is it obvious once you're under the car? They're on each side of the sill jacking points, there are 4 sill jacking points and so 8 holes to drill. it's just a bit annoying to drill them if you've raised the car on that jacking point ideally you get the car raised by a foot on that side so you can get a drill and bit under the sill.

I used a fat pin to attempt clearing mine. Somewhat worrying that I've seen people jamming screw drivers in the drain holes to clear them. Mine seem too narrow. Wondering if drilling will open them up a bit. How far do you drill into them? if that makes sense?
Also where can you buy replacement water plugs? I can't seem to find this part online.

You'll know it's too far when it comes out the other side About an inch or so.

the whole point of drilling them is that it makes it harder for small things to block them. at the same time I'd get a spray-can of ACF50 and give it a good blast through the wholes from below and above. (under the sill cover) - anything to try and reduce silly rust.
