Good evening. Having just taken the gearbox off to change the clutch, we plan to change the rear main seal while we are at it. However, there is an oil leak that seems to be coming from above this seal. I have attached photos. Can anyone suggest where this is coming from? I don't even know what that circular disc is. Any comments or help much appreciated. Ian

Isn't the "circular disc" a core plug? The leak looks to be above that

To be honest, the photos do indicate it's from above maybe. Doesnt look so obvious under the garage lights. Head gasket perhaps

I thought the core plug is the water jacket so not going to be the source of an oil leak anyway?
Await an expert to comment....

non-expert comment: That's filthy, take some brake cleaner or ethanol or degreaser to the area, get it really clean, and then see where oil comes from. not sure if the oil will leak without the engine operating but.. it's hard to see when there is oil everywhere. it might take a few days to weep out..
if you still can't see where the oil is coming from, use a new clean paper towel to see where oil has 'reappeared'...

Best it spotless, then give it a run and check to see for visual signs or get some tissue paper and use that to check for leaks you may not be able to see.

Thanks guys. Took more photos to a Mazda guy and he suggests it's the head gasket, so going to change that and get the head skimmed while we are on.
