I just bought this Exhaust to go on my Mk1, but having got under the car there is actually a nice custom system already, so I'll leave it where it is! Car Make Corns version 1 exhaust for sale, really nice condition and it's the 1 piece version which has a much nicer sound Stainless steel throughout, very well made and in really nice condition, dusty and in need of a clean (which I'll give it over the next few days) but no damage apart from a few scratches £300 Sold Mk1 1.6 Decat, just a basic 370mm straight pipe but 100% useable £30 Mk1 1.6 4-2-1 manifold, believed to be HKS but still trying to confirm that Really nice condition, no cracks or damage just some scratches and general wear £150 Sold Pics to follow Collection from Hagley, West Midlands

Does the manifold terminate in the standard position?
My AK Automotive 'Race' exhaust bolts directly to the standard manifold, so I'm trying to find something that is a direct replacement for the OEM manifold!

Now I'm not sure if I'm more confused... lol The early non-cat mk1s had a different manifold to the later cat mk1s?? Or was it just that the early ones had a downpipe straight into the rest of the system, whereas the later ones had a shorter downpipe into a cat (of various sizes IIRC?)??

I have a hks manifold on my car and don't believe this will be compatible with the AK automotive (race version) exhaust. Why? Because I looked into getting the 'Race' version and as I understood things it attaches to the standard manifold (that needs to be retained in the mk1 race series) where the downpipe connects.
For this reason I considered the cat back version of the AK exhaust which they offer.
The 4-2-1 manifold combines what would normally be the manifold and the downpipe on the standard car and connects where the Cat or decat would be.
Pretty sure that if you were to get this to work with the 421 you'd end up ditching a large portion of the AK exhaust.

Awesome, thanks for the info - I confuse myself with all the different variations lol I believe that there is a SS manifold (that is an OEM replacement) available from MX5Parts that would suit my needs, but at 350 quid new or something like that, I will wait for a secondhand version to come up...

I'm a bit confused on why the manifold wouldn't fit? The standard 1.6 Mk1 manifold is a 2 piece item, this is one piece but it's the same fit. This goes up to where the standard catalytic converter would start, same as any other manifold. If the AK exhaust deletes the cat, then it would bolt straight onto this. If it doesn't, then you'll still want a cat or a decat, which would bolt onto this.
The AK standard exhaust is a 'standard' cat back exhaust. The race exhaust is effectively an exhaust and decat combined, and it attaches onto the end of the standard manifold.
All MX5s had cats, none were ever made without them.

Russell I should have been clearer, the ak race exhaust combines the the decat and downpipe - It's more a case of the ak 'race' exhaust doesn't work with most aftermarket manifolds as they typically combine the manifold and downpipe seen in a 'standard' car. I called them up some time ago and nearly bought the race exhaust but was directed to a cat back version they did.

The problem with it having been designed to fit onto the standard manifold for the race regs would mean you couldn't fit it onto the top part of a stainless 2 part one as they are a different id, so you'd be going from a larger manifold into a smaller downpipe with a step, which would be pretty bad for flow ... so I think you'd be stuck with the standard manifold which doesn't flow very well ... This is the picture I grabbed off the AK site before they took the exhausts off the webpage: Mine is different, without the slash-cut larger tip - it just sort of continues out the rear box the same size as it went in, before being cut off once clear of the bumper. It looks like an OEM standard thing, which I like I don't think I actually have a picture of my system off the car - it arrived packaged up and I didn't get a chance to unwrap it before it went to the mechanic man for fitting.

Sorry to hijack the post - But does anyone know where the video clips for the AK Auto exhaust is? I remember seeing them on Nutz many aeons ago, but I can't find them anywhere now. ta.
