Garages over here are Canoeing terrible for this.
A number of times I have taken my car in and been given a quote, only to find it significantly higher when i go to pick it up.
After the first time, i was very clear every time that i expect to be called if the price will be different. Nothing. This is 3 separate places as well, so not just a prarrie canoe/dodgy garage.
First one was 1300 CHF -> 2100 CHF. "We needed some more parts"
Then a "4 hour" job that turned into 9 hours - but it's ok, they only charged me for 8... >1000CHF
It just goes on and on. And if you don't pay there is a very organised dunning system - 2 strikes with fees, then you are black listed and it can get very unpleasant if you ever want credit.
