the MK2/2.5 (NB/NBfl) have a 6 speed gearbox (the Aisin AZ6 gearbox) and these are shared with a few other cars / manufacturers.

The basic Aisin AZ6 gearbox was made in several versions, with front cases for these engines:

Nissan FS6R30A (source: Nissan pickup 2004-)
Nissan FS6R31A for SR20DET (source: S15)
Nissan FS6R31A for VQ35 (source: Z33 "350Z")
Nissan FS6R92A for VQ35 (source: G35) 130 lbs weight
Nissan FS6R92A for SR20 (source: S15)
Mazda Renesys (RX8 rotary)
Mazda Y16M-D F & B (1999-2005 MX-5)
Toyota J160 for 1G & 3S (E10 Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS200)
Toyota 86/Scion FR-S
Subaru BRZ

so, this is the same as xyz

maybe or maybe not

legends have that the newer Aisin AZ6 boxes have better selector forks and upgraded internals / syncroniser setups BUT as always nothing that may stand-up in court

I've trawled the internot and found plenty of contradictory info, seems that the only way to know is to strip & measure several different gearboxes (the gears / selector hubs etc. as the casings ARE different as probably are the input / output shafts)

so, searcging for an rx8 / gt86 or brx box to investigate....

anyway, theres a widely publicized 'circlip' mod

that can be used as part of a rebuild...

also, Cusco make a close-ratio 1st-2nd gear set to fit the Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT86

I messaged the guy on MT about the circlip mod a while back - he wanted €30 or so for the information on how to do that mod...

I get the selector fork issue on my 6 speed when it's hot - shifting from 4th to 5th under load if it doesn't go in cleanly you lose the ability to select all gears without much double de clutching and stick waggling. It seems it's not *that* uncommon with the Aisin boxes..

the circlip mod is basically just deepening the circlip groove in the laycluster & using a suitable method of filling it

this concerns me, I've read about this (only in Mx5 gearboxes?

) so am looking into hybrid building - have an rx8 box incoming

I think MT chappy (JRMiata) had drawings with the dimensions needed etc for the box machining / uprated clips etc..

I'm in two minds what to do with the gearbox - it only does it now and then, when it's hot, but it's really annoying when it does. And the rest of the box is a bit notchy and not as nice as the 5 speed. The FM Stage 2 clutch is also heavy and not very nice in traffic, so if I did pull the box to change the clutch I'd probably swap it out for a different box, and possibly get it machined before it went in (if I could find someone who had access to the kit to do it). But then I keep looking at the SPS Motorsport Tailgate McNoIndicate box kit longingly (their kit retains a PPF so you can use a standard Mazda diff).

But then again, the car hasn't moved for close to 3 years so maybe I should stop prevaricating and just get it back on the road, faults and all..

no.

but you can easily get adaptor-plates to fit the Rx8 gearbox on many different engines......

and I'm getting one to play with shortly....

hybrid Mx5/Rx8 gearbox build in the future

If its a Mk3 swap its more straight forward.

to hybrid it might take the Mx rear case / tailhousing AND mainshaft as possibly different lengths to the Rx shaft (& maybe mainshaft have differentdiameter splines / spline-count to confuse matters?)

another intertesting tidbit is input shaft / clutch splines...

Mx5 have 22 spline & 24mm diameter

Rx8 have 23 splines & 1" (25.4mm) diameter - same as many Ford gearboxes like the Sierra type9...

another conideration is input shaft lengths, the Mx5 has a 'short' input with the clutch splines / 'spiggot' inside the bellhousing, from what I can see the Rx gearbox is longer between bellhousing front / engine face and the gearcase join so can easily modify the Rx to allow proper crankshaft spiggot insertion (something that I was intending to address with weld by adding a Vauxhall bellhousing lip to the Mx gearcaese)

will find out (& post info) when I've a gearbox in my shed........
