I know it’s all here … somewhere. But I’m hoping for help here please.
I’ve had an idea for a project based on a MK2. I’ve decided on a MK2 for lots of reasons. A part of which will be a drastic reduction in weight. Put the engine/gear box/transmission to one side, that I’ve dealt with. I can loose about 160Kg there.
The body is going to be a “Speedster” ….. At last Zed …. This could happen now. The front subframe will be tubular and save a chunk there.
So what weights do you have for ….. Seats, wheels/tyres about a max of 185 to 215 width. Battery. Loose the P/S and if fitted the A/C Loose the soft top and frame. All or most of the front screen/side windows.
And any other ideas for weight loose?
I’m thinking about sub 800Kg might just be doable.
Right now this is a paper exercise but it should turn into a reality in 2023. I’m basing the project on a real world proven car that has covered many miles. I’ve spoken to lots of people and read lots of information over the last year building up to this. And thanks to Zed for letting me bend his ear with my crazy ideas …. and he still talks to me.
Regards. Rich.

[quote author=" thruxton" source="/post/55334/thread" timestamp="1672415185"The front subframe will be tubular and save a chunk there[/quote] ~12lb (5 1/2kg?) difference mighty5s.com/post/52575/threadLoose the P/S and if fitted the A/C Loose the soft top and frame. All or most of the front screen/side windows ps isn't that heavy, why make your life hard? ac is heavy, not just the 'pump' ragtop frame is heavy! glass is heavy as will be the windscreen frame as it's reinforced & part of the roll-over protection built into the car. the mk2 / 2.5 car is supposedly stiffer & lighter than a mk1 (no idea on mk3 or mk4) so maybe a good starting point? sound-deadening is also heavy - especially when wet Rich.

Zed. Bare interior with wipe down seats. The engine and gearbox weigh in at 95Kg so no weight there over the steering. And any way mam … my beautiful MK2 that my chum turned into an insurance write off was manual rack.
In my eyes the MK2 will ‘Speedser-style’ prettier than the others, we’ll see.
Regards. Rich.

Hello thruxtonAs you said, the glass/motors etc is all really heavy. I saved 12kgs(3kg per corner) by changing from R888Rs on Prorace1.2s to AO52s on Rota Grids. Light weight brake callipers? Think Zed. might know about this. Same with suspension arms maybe? Honda Civic Radiator? They look pretty efficient & possibly carry less coolant. Drill/cut out the reinforcement bars behind the bumpers. Don’t carry a spare wheel etc.

Hi Howard. Thank you. Yep, that’s all good information. So far this wacky idea is stacking up very well.
Any info on seats?
I’m sure a just sub 850Kg is on the cards.
Regards. Rich.

Light weight brake callipers? Think Zed. might know about this. Same with suspension arms maybe? 949racing.com/product/supermiata-boxmount-11-front-big-brake-kit-90-05/ ~£600 + post but saves a chunk of unsprung wieght, this in itself allows the dampers an easier life! as to suspension arms, the jury is out at the moment as tubular arms can be fabricated but some design / thought is needed (I've bought standard Mazda front wishbones to avoid older / rusted items!) as howardb66 suggests, wheels can be another place to loose a few Lbs / kgs - often overlooked... Radiators, another minefield I've settled on a Vw Polo crossflow rad, as used in plenty of kitcars like Westfield7's etc. the oem design aluminium core / plastic caps is narrower & shallower & more efficient than standard Mazda items (& probably aftermarket offerings?) Was changing the wheels & tyres over- the difference in weight was really noticeable so I put them on the scales.
