Howdy guys,
Fizbne back again, coming in hot with the philosophies.
So I've had some form of NA MX5 as my primary & fun car for a long time now. I bought my first proper drivable '5 in -checks instagram- June 2013. Wow, nearly 10 years ago lmao.
I sold it in -checks instagram again- October 2015 just before I took a year out in Australia for some travelling. After I came back, I tried another MX5 - Didn't like that one. Sold it and gave the warm hatch life a go. Didn't like that either. So bought another MX5. It was alright, but then I found a Mazdaspeed B-Spec in August 2018 and I've had that since then.
I've done all the things I’ve wanted to do to an MX5 in relation to mods - ITB’s, decent ECU, posh coilovers, etc etc. I said when I bought this car, it was going to be my forever car. But ULEZ is coming to where I live, and let's be real - There are a whole world of other cars that need to be experienced. In my current position, if I do want to experience another motoring gem, then I'll need to get rid of my MX5, or find a job that pays me double ASAP.
The other issue is: It's one of the best MX5's I've ever driven. I’ve driven turbo ones, S/C’d ones, another ITB one you know, the usual. I’m not a racing driver, but compared to the other MX5’s I’ve driven, mine is so well set up. The car reacts to each and every input so predictably, I can only describe it really as Jinba Ittai. Honestly man. Anyways, I've learned so much driving this particular car and over this last year I've done more trackdays in a year than I have in previous years. It is so fun. SO FUN. I've also done all the mods that I would do to one, so as the car currently is, it's just a case of maintenance and repairs. The mods are done, I'm happy with it, it's Canoeing great. If I had the means to keep it aside I absolutely would. But yep, a whole world of cars. Ok now I’m going around in circles.
I've thought about renting a small garage outside of the ULEZ zone so my car would be a 100% pure trackday / fun machine (I have a terrible daily, for daily duties). But thinking about that, spending £100 a month just to avoid the £12.50 fee to drive my car outside of London does seem a bit silly, especially needing to travel there + fuel + you know, whatever.
But yeaaaaaah, I just don't know. There are so many other cars to explore. I've got a long list on google sheets with cars I'd love to own in the future etc. That list has gotten shorter and shorter though over the years with the price of certain models just going absolutely silly. I love this car, but I think I want more? And also life is too short man, the past 4 years have just FLOWN by!
I’m really leaning towards a ZZW30 MR2 / MR-S (the MK3, froggy looking one). I drove a well sorted one with a decent suspension setup. Very similar mods and philosophy to my car - coilovers, ECU, still had the 1ZZ but in its stock form a more potent engine than my incredibly incredible B6 (very depressing haha). Not built to chase lap times, built to be very fun and an educational machine. And holy wowzers did I have fun. Midship layout makes so much sense performance wise, the way the car rotates around the centre of mass is just wonderful. It’s a little bit snappy at the limit, but that’s the whole idea right? Pushing your boundaries and whatnot.
If the car does go, it’ll probably be after I run the car at one or two more trackdays this year as a sort of send off and final run to gain some XP with sublime FR layout fun.
So yeah, what do you guys think? What would you do? In my situ?
Much Love,
Fizbne
