So I noticed today that with the clutch down/depressed, a very 'grind-y' sort of rattling sound has appeared... IIRC it is doing it whether it is in gear or not, and you can feel the 'grindyness' through the gear lever. It seems to disappear when the clutch is up. Going from previous posts (such as this one: mighty5s.com/post/41156/thread ) it could be the release bearing or spigot bearing. Is that correct? Is it about to explode at speed and take my ankles with it?? I reeeeally could do without needing to pay for a new clutch kit and fitting at this moment in time due to other substantial non-car bills incoming shortly... (And while it's apart, a lightweight flywheel would of course seem sensible to fit... lol) All thoughts and comments gratefully received, thank you in advance!!

Probably the release bearing indeed but.. unti you do the change who can say.
as for which replacement .. depends on your use case - if you're expecting it to stand up to 'abuse/trackdays/POWERRRR' don't touch exedy..
I've got skuzzle clutches in both mine.
I expect the bofi clutches are similar.
otherwise if you want an oem clutch and it's just normal use the exedy is very cheap and will be fine.

Christ future diy release bearing replacement will be finished in time for next summer Rich. I now have a driveway and garage, which is a step-up from the previous situation But the garage is crammed with stuff and the driveway is on a 30 degree slope... so I will be paying the garage man I know to do anything underneath the car... lol

My MK2 had the same problem. Put it up on my two post lift …. Looked at it.
Nah, sod that. I’m not dropping the gearbox. So with a 30mm hole cutter I set about the bell housing. Hole cut …. Then a spray tin of 3in1 silicon spray I launched into the thrust bearing. 3 years, yes, three years latter, still works just fine with no noise …. ha!
Regards. Rich.

Reminds me of the chap with a 1904 something-or-other who kept several bottles of brake cleaner in the picnic basket and just kept spraying on the flywheel while driving instead of fixing the oil leak.

Am pricing up options for spigot bearing, release bearing, plate, cover.. shiny lightened flywheel... OEM Release Bearing is only about 20-something quid, which is pretty reasonable. OEM Cover is something mental like 400 quid from MX5Parts I see an Exedy plate+cover kit is basically OEM and not too bad (£120-ish?) Spigot bearing seems to be pattern-part for about £8 but I will have to ring Mazda for OEM prices. Lightweight flywheel in one-piece chromoly (is that the correct term?) because it's all apart anyway and I like the idea of more 'zingy' rev-matching etc., seems to be £300-400 or more for options that are actually available... And fitting will be, what, several hours of labour? so probably the best part of 800 quid or thereabouts if I get everything done? Good job I've not got other massive PITA-but-not-rally-avoidable bills coming in this month... (Since when did car tax go up to £325? WTF?)

Fitting should be 4ish hours of labour, they're really not that hard if you've got a lift. Full exedy kit will be fine and includes all the bearings etc, so you should be able to get all that fitted for £500 total. Adding a lightened flywheel would be nice but hard to justify if money's the problem!

Double long externders and a angle-cross-thingy to reach the trans bolts easily. You can do this on jackstands if needed.
Then bench press the trans down, its on dowels, so some fiddling. Mind that you do not pour all the trans oil out when you tip the trans with shaft out. Might be nicer to drain it first even if not obligatory.
Getting the exhaust off is often worse than getting the trans down if its been on for a while.
