Hi dadbif. Thanks for the heads-up.
I’ve been reading about the 240V routers out there and the more portable battery operated ones.
I’m thinking a mains powered one because I don’t need to move it. A DATA only SIM, Smarty do a great one, unlimited.
But why will I need and outdoor antenna and how do they connect to a chosen router?
Regards. Rich.

An outdoor antenna will boost the 4G signal - if it's a bit patchy it will help, but if it's pretty decent indoors (or on a window sill) then you may not need it. It would connect via a cable, pretty similar to a TV Aerial (but a different plug)
Battery vs Mains is much of a muchness - battery is more portable so you can take it with you if you need to, mains will probably have facilities for an external aerial if you need it.

Thanks Jon. The 4G coverage is said to be excellent in my area.

one last thing to think about...
get a connection that goes vi a different provider than your phone does.
that way if one route is knocked out you have the other.

You can get directional outdoor antenna, so if you know the compass bearing of your nearest mast you can point straight at it. Just make sure you get an unlimited data sim for the router.

Thanks guys for all the detail and the help. It’s much appreciated. This looks like the choice. 3g.co.uk/home-broadband/three/4g-hubAnd it is different to my phone carrier. Regards. Rich.

It looks like they have a 5G version with unlimited data and a 1 month rolling contract for £4 a month more: 3g.co.uk/home-broadband/three/5g-hubI would probably suggest going for a 5G one over 4G for futureproofedness - it will still do 4G if there's no 5G signal, but if/when they upgrade your mast to 5G you are already covered...

If the Wi-Fi throughout your property is flaky, but the reception at the router is good, you can always daisy chain Wi-Fi repeaters from your hub.

UPDATE …. beep beep.
So all of the previous resulted in failure! Apparently even though the 4G coverage is good with “3” despite their coverage map, it’s a no go, that’s what “3” say.
Ok, moving on.
I’ve now placed an order with Vodafone for their top draw ‘Rural-Network’. It’s £299 fitting. You get a an outside aerial set up and blah blah, they come and fit it. Also unlimited Data ….. that’s £39.99 a month for 12 months.
More than before but at least it’s the top job and I’m truly not at all bothered by the £40/month.
So now I’m waiting for their Engineer to come and screw it all together.
It’s not been easy. But with your help here, which I am very thankful to all of you for, we’ve done it …. I think?
Regards. Rich.

Best of luck, the external antenna should make a difference.
