Greetings people who know things that I don’t.
Situation.
Here in the UK. No land line and no possibility of getting one. Need internet somehow.
Going to be using my lap top and streaming tv through my magic box, er hem. Not Sky or BT blah blah.
In an area of only 4G at best coverage.
Im researching satellite broadband, with not much success. Such as who to talk to about it, who are the providers and the monthly cost. The sites on the internet so far tell me sod all or then after filing in the boxes go and compare …. landline deals.
Then there are some kind of dongle type modem things that might sort the problem?
It would be great if I could just replicate my Sky situation that I currently have in my main house.
Just to be clear. Believe me, there is no possibility of getting an overhead or underground cable to the building.
Thanks for any help or advise you could send my way.
Regards. Rich.

When I lived in Spain there was no landline in my vicinity and Wi-Fi was in its infancy, I used a company called SKYDSL, downloaded from a satellite at the (then) blistering speed of 2mbps and uploaded via a 3G mobile phone. It worked well for a couple of years, then I moved to a house with a landline. They seem to still be in business. www.skydsl.eu/en-NL/Personal/Internet-via-satellite

Hello Rich
My Mum lives in rural Devon with no phone coverage, she uses a company called Bush Broadband. It gets a strong 4G signal then radio relays it to the valley where she lives.

I did some research a few years ago - most of the Satellite BB providers appeared to be fairly terrible - bad latancy, very low data caps and really bad contention. Starlink works very differently to the 'old fashioned' satellite BB providers and is supposed to be very good, if a bit more pricey...
If the 4G signal is half decent, using a dedicated 4G router with external aerial is probably a reasonable option too.

Thanks for all the ideas. I’ve just started this quest. I have had a decent detailed long e-mail from these people today. I only enquired last night. So that’s a good start.

Tonight I will plough through their information. Just scanning the e-mail it’s looking good, but we will see.

Me again. I think that the idea Jon put forward is looking good now.
I have very good 4G coverage from a few providers so it seems.
Any suggestions as to a package and from whom please, or a collection of parts?
Thanks. Rich.

Which providers have good service where you are? If you can figure out which networks have good service, that's your starting point to getting a good deal... The better the 4G signal, the better your speed Once you have the best networks, then I'd be looking at the smaller operators who piggy back from those networks - giff gaff, smarty, ID Mobile etc all piggy back off O2 / Three / Voda etc but typically offer much better deals. Then find a package that either has a decent data allowance, or unlimited from one of those and who also allow tethering (or look for a data only sim). Last piece would be the router - easiest way for testing is to enable tethering/hotspot on your phone with your choice of SIM and use that as your access point for your yo-ho-ho me hearties box. Once you've confirmed it's working, you can get a dedicated hardware router with 4G / 5G connection setup which will be probably a little faster and more reliable...

Hi Jon. Thank you so much for all the detail.
Being 1000 years old, almost as old as Zed. I missed out on stuff like this so details are a terrific help for me. I shall digest this information, it’s a bit early right now for my head to be working and soon it will be too late.
Then I shall report back.
Regards. Rich.

Hi Jon ….. Aha! The penny has dropped ….. Now I understand. Thanks again for all the detail.
I want a Galaxy Z flip 5 phone so the front runner at the moment is Vodafone. Unlimited data package + two extra benefits, allows tethering, a camera that I can photograph the surface of the moon with, well, you get the idea. A shop in my town to deal with.
Get that monkey. Tether my do-dab box to it, bingo! Then get a 4G router? Do I then tether to that router and then that to my do-dab box?
As you can see I’m waaaay out of my comfort zone here.
Regards. Rich.

If you want a new phone, then the simplest way is to get that, then when you are in the sticks, you fire up the portable hotspot on the phone, connect your box to the network that you just created, and off you go. The downside is that you will probably use a bit of battery while you are doing it, and maybe you won't get the best 4G/5G signal inside. And it may be a pain if you want to use your phone for something else at the same time, but it should work. The other option, would be to get a dedicated SIM just for this, and either stick it in an old phone and do as above, or buy a cheap mifi/router type device and use this as your portable hotspot instead. You can get SIM only deals with no tie in to a contract with decent data allowances for £20 or so a month. If the former works well enough, you don't need to do the latter
