I just sold a 525i touring. One of the best cars I've had (non mx5 of course). Wasn't fast but worked motorways easily but it was one of the nicest engines I've had in a car. Very nice and smooth 6 cylinder. 2.5 litre. Handled very well for a heavy lump and felt quite agile for such a large car.
Be careful with the older ones as they can get tin wor although only tends to be around archers. I'd go for the biggest engine he can afford tonrun/ keep. The lower end of the diesels are quite dull and gutless despite the torque and the lower end petrols aren't fantastic. I had the 2.5 litre petrol and I wouldn't wanna try a 1.6...
i think ink speed wise it might have been tainted as the car previous to the Tailgate McNoIndicate I had was a 4.2 supervharged v8 jag. Which was fast!

I've seen the V8 540s go for something ridiculous like a grand on occasion, I swear!

Nothing wrong with e46 330 coupe except the fuel consumption, however at £5k you could buy trouble, I'd avoid one series - I had one - horrible I never thought I'd say this but I'd consider an A3 or S3 Quattro, I just bought my mates old 99 1.8turbo for £250 put it through its MOT and it's a brilliant car, goes well cheap to run an maintain, it's done 200k miles and still going strong, as long as they are serviced they are good. As someone else said - cheap way into 4wd and you'd get a good one for £5k

A 1 series? Fail.
I like bms, couldn't have one as I couldn't live with myself knowing every other roadster user thinking I'm a massive Solo Canoeist, but theres no doubt they are good cars...
Except the 1 series and the z3 which are both prarrie canoe. The 1 series looks like fire damaged lego, and the handling is worse than a focus St for the same money, a d like the boxster, its the poor mans beemer. The z3 is basically an mx5 rip off that doesn't handle either and looks awful.

I run a 3-series as a daily, the reson they're common is that they're good. Best steering feel in the class.

Going for a little drive today with him to see how his car holds up. If he can't keep up with an automatic mx5 there's something very wrong
